Hello friends. We are postponing tonight's Town Hall to be better prepared to host and facilitate a safe, productive, and transparent discussion about community safety. Please see the letter below from the group of volunteer facilitators. We will let you all know when a new date has been selected.

"Our Dear Community,

The Town Hall scheduled for this evening, May 18th, 2026 from 6-9pm CT at City Lit is being postponed.

With understanding and empathy regarding how frustrating this late notice of postponement might be for folks who have rescheduled life around this, taken time off work/rehearsal/other obligations, we sincerely apologize for being unable to have communicated this any sooner than right now.

As a volunteer group of theatre artists trying to organize this effort, we are sensitive to the crucial need for the Chicago Theatre Community to convene, collaborate, and be heard in space with each other. We all deserve transparency for this necessary, vulnerable effort of community care to be successful.

In our enthusiasm and drive to serve our community by initiating this conversation, it seems we have made several missteps that have led to doubt, distrust or confusion over the function, safety, and intent of the Town Hall. After receiving concerns regarding this effort and having consultation with other organizers within the community, we are pausing to address those.

We’ve collectively hit a point of burnout with these efforts, thus we also need to take care of ourselves so we can recharge, regroup and try again from a more trauma-informed place, with intentional inclusivity, and for stronger community safety planning.

We will follow up with more information to those who RSVP'd, including sharing a feedback survey so you can vote on a new Town Hall date and so we can listen to any constructive feedback to implement into the rescheduled town hall.

We hope this email will help provide some clarity and can serve as an open invitation for voluntary contribution to better prepare all of us for convening in the near future.

Thank you for your kindness, empathy, patience and grace as we figure out how to navigate the best pathway forward for these important and timely conversations."

With sincerity and solidarity,
- Town Hall Facilitators and Volunteers

In February, we vowed to protect safe spaces and speak out when standards need to evolve. Over the last two months, it has become clear that the Jeff Awards Committee has caused harm to the community with their actions during this time of crisis, so City Lit’s board of directors has unanimously decided not to invite them to our upcoming production of Scaramouche.

We are glad the Committee is conducting a review of their current policies and procedures, and we eagerly await their responses to community concerns on July 1. Until the Jeff Awards Committee demonstrates a sincere commitment to community safety, we will continue to make decisions about inviting the Committee on a show-by-show basis.

We also recognize that the real work involved in eradicating abuse in our community and creating safe spaces belongs to us all. Therefore, we are committing to hosting a community-wide Town Hall Meeting on the evening of Monday, May 18 at City Lit Theater. We will discuss improving safety standards, options for community oversight, and an open forum for discussion. RSVPs will be required and that information will be made available shortly.

If you have any questions or concerns, you may contact our Executive Artistic Director Brian Pastor at [email protected].
