The past 12 months have seen relentless trials by fire. After 10 months of job hunting (what equates to five interviews/applications every day for one year) and unemployment support being cut off I began to imagine I had become one of the 'unemployable' millions, the loss of 13 friends and colleagues, HIV aging and Long Term Survivors (LTS)--more than 60% of those living with HIV today are 50 and over-- these are people who experienced the horrors of ignorance, negligence, and the awful irresponsible truth of systemic discriminatory behaviors from the highest levels of public office to our childhood kitchen tables, to the COVID pandemic

BUT then I remembered the resilience, ingenuity, and industrious heritage my community has taught me.

It was a personal conversation with a founding member of the international LGBTQIA+ human rights NGO, Synergia, an educator and conflict mediator turned Nintendo executive, a journalist who helped ignite the Obama administration's interfaith initiative, an award winning transq***r poet, and a powerhouse performer, writer, coding entrepreneur and now the irrefutably irreverent actress Angelica Ross, now a household name.

People who I worked with, for, and inspired my early work and motivated my capacity to have convictions, passions, and a playful imagination that cannot be knocked down. I now watch them on Saturday Night Live, Ryan Murphy award winning and acclaimed television series, landmark documentary and feature films demonstrating equity and accountability in an accurate telling of our community's history.

It is the pride that comes in seeing those I have worked with succeed and realize their dreams that empowers and affirms that same sense of resilience.

From that savvy, kind, fearless generator came Q***R, ILL + OKAY (QIO) the performance, awareness, and advocacy project formed in the face of adversity when diagnosed myself with HIV that allowed an experimental DIY idea to become an enterprising, international, visionary non-profit that drove donors, partners, sponsors, and foundations over five years to exponentially surpass any goals imagined and rounds out to nearly two million dollars of community belief and investment, six year AIDS Healthcare Foundation funded, four year Visual AIDS grantee.

I would not have made it this far with help of so many of you. Now is a time to give back and share in promoting the growth of those who need and deserve it most. All of this is possible because of you and I hope you'll help continue the momentum!

Q***R, ILL + OKAY is an annual multidisciplinary performance series exploring, challenging and reinventing narratives about the lives of q***r individuals and their relationships to HIV and other forms of mental and chronic illness. After being diagnosed as HIV+ in 2013, Joe Varisco invited an expansive artistic community to create new work around the relationship between q***rness, the body, and chronic illness.

“Q***R, ILL + OKAY has grown exponentially for our fourth annual production. This show is a powerfully personal exploration of reinventing narratives that is critically inclusive of a vast spectrum of experience. I could not be prouder to helm the production of an unrelentingly forward moving conversation with these artistic communities. This year we’ve doubled all efforts, bringing two weekends of new and original content with fourteen artists, in collaboration with Oracle Productions and Art AIDS America Chicago, a national touring exhibition. Q***R, ILL + OKAY elevates conversation as a creative movement engaging arts and social justice as tools for effective change on a national scale,” says Joe Varisco.
