The Thing in the Shadows

The hallway in the old Grand Magnolia Hotel always felt cold, but tonight, the single light over the worn red carpet itched. As a lone guest walked towards their room, they noticed something in the deepest shadow at the far end of the corridor. It was just a shape at first, darker than the velvet black, but it didn't move like a reflection. As they froze, the figure—gaunt and draped in an irregular, dark shroud—seemed to unfold slightly. Its head tilted, and two faint, pale glints, mimicking eyes, locked onto the traveler. The warm light felt useless against the absolute darkness that was now standard.
