Thodos Dance Chicago is an ensemble of well-rounded artists who teach, choreograph, and perform. The Company’s highly unique mission of inspiring expression through dance education, dance creation, and dance performance has established Thodos Dance Chicago as an innovative presence in American contemporary dance. Highlights of the Company’s annual performance season include the Fall and Winter Concerts, touring engagements, as well as, the “New Dances” choreography series presented each summer.

Calling all Chicagoland Dancemakers: Be part of New Dances 2024!
Call for proposals for choreography submissions is OPEN.
Proposals must be submitted by March 1st at 12:00 pm CT.

Thodos Dance Chicago and DanceWorks Chicago are excited to build on and continue a shared tradition of developing choreographic talent while serving Chicago’s dance community. New Dances 2024 will be performed June 20-22, 2024 at The Ruth Page Center For the Arts.

- As New Dances is focused on supporting artists who have made a commitment to the Chicago community, please respect the residency requirement: Choreographer must reside in Chicago or a suburb of Chicago as of March 1, 2024.

Thodos Dance Chicago and DanceWorks Chicago continue as joined forces to present work created and performed by some of Chicago’s most talented and gifted dance movers and makers. Our Story

Highlights of the Thodos Dance Chicago include our Weekend Winter Workshop, Summer Intensive, and “New Dances” choreography series presented each summer. Thodos Dance Chicago was founded in 1992 by Artistic Director, Melissa Thodos, as a hub for dancers to grow, not only as performers, but as well-rounded dance artists. Thodos Dance Chicago features the American voice in contemporary dance. In addition to award winning repertory works, it has created two critically acclaimed story ballets, both named as one of the top performances by the Chicago Sun-Times. These are great American stories brought to life through movement and music: “A Light in the Dark,” based on the life of Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan (as told in the classic book and play “The Miracle Worker”). “The White City,” based on the extraordinary events of the Columbian Exposition of 1893 (as told in the best-selling book “Devil in the White City”). TDC is dedicated to mentorship of dance artists. Train with Founder and Artistic Director, Melissa Thodos, and TDC Alumni during one of Weekend Winter Workshop 2018 and Summer Intensive 2019. TDC's leading dance educators offer individualized instruction to participating dancers. Weekend Winter Workshop 2018: 12/22/18 & 12/18; learn more at https://thodosdancechicago.org/events/winter-weekend-intensive-2018/ Summer Intensive 2019: 07/22/18-08/03/18; one week and two week options TDC strongly advocates for the dance community and its history to be shared. Currently, we are working to create a a PBS-ready broadcast special on “Sono’s Journey” which was choreographed by Melissa Thodos and premiered in 2016 at the Auditorium Theater. The broadcast will include the full-length dance film of Sono's Journey and a special and intimate ten-minute "Behind the Scenes" introduction. TDC’s commitment to dance creation is highlighted in our New Dances choreography series, which been in Chicago since the 1980’s. TDC began producing New Dances in 2000 and is now co-produced with DanceWorks Chicago since 2018. New Dances empowers dance artists to create highly-charged, illuminating world premieres.
