What an incredible day of music, storytelling, and community!

Thank you to everyone who came out to Stomping Grounds Open Stage during Make Music Chicago. Even with the weather bringing us indoors, the energy never stopped.

A huge thank you to every artist who performed on our Open Stage, as well as our fellow Make Music Chicago artists ALMA.YEON, and Jabari Zakee for filling the day with incredible music and creativity. Your willingness to share your gifts is what makes this community so special.

Special thanks to our featured artist Jovan Landry for leading an inspiring workshop and delivering a phenomenal performance.

We’re also incredibly grateful to the entire Haibayo Café team for opening their doors and helping us pivot at the last minute, to Make Music Chicago and PC Gooden-Smiley for supporting community arts, and to our photographer Jefferson Mok for beautifully capturing the day.

Thank you to everyone who attended, performed, volunteered, and cheered each other on. Moments like these remind us why we continue to create spaces where every voice matters.

Stay connected with everything we’re building at sglai.org. We can’t wait to see you at the next Open Stage!

It is with deep sadness that we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Eric Castillo.

Eric was an MC, a poet, and a beloved member of the Stomping Grounds Literary Arts Initiative Open Stage family. He was one of our most consistent performers and a passionate advocate for the community we were building together.

What so many of us will remember most is Eric’s heart. Despite the health challenges he faced, he always showed up with kindness, positivity, and a genuine love for people. His presence made every Open Stage brighter, and his encouragement helped create the welcoming community we cherish today.

Although he is no longer with us, his legacy will continue to live on through the art he shared, the friendships he built, and the joy he brought to every room he entered.

Eric, thank you for your laughter, your presence, your poetry, and for living each day to the fullest. You will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.

Rest well, our friend. ❤️
