If there’s a gentler soul with a greater capacity for love and kindness, I’ve yet to encounter it. (Spanish below)

With profound sadness I share the passing of my partner of nearly four and a half years, Alejandra Madrid Perez, who fought valiantly and ever so gracefully but succumbed to a wickedly rare and aggressive cancer — 112 days from biopsy to goodbye.

She passed Sunday evening completely at peace, holding my hand, surrounded by loved ones… just as the sunset touched the horizon outside her window, if you can believe it.

It’s rare for me to post something personal in this space, but I feel compelled to honor this truly extraordinary woman publicly.

For starters, she was beautiful and had the most wonderful laugh, which was more of a yelp, really, a genuine and infectious burst of joyfulness followed by laughter. She was easygoing, had a silly side, and was just really fun to be around with her delightful and inspiring ‘live the life’ attitude. She had a sweet, lilting voice which was adorable and, indeed, I adored it.

She was an artist, in practice and bearing, and was a deeply sensitive and intuitive soul. It amazed and humbled me to watch her routinely perceive and understand things far beyond my grasp.

So naturally authentic, present, and candid in her being that it could be almost unsettling at times — she had the rare ability to approach even the most delicate circumstance with direct honesty but also great tenderness.

It’s hard to adequately capture and convey what made her so uniquely special and the closest I can manage is to say she was a bewildering, enchanting blend of woman-child; at once both so innocent and vulnerable but yet also keenly wise, knowing, and strong. She was a marvel, quite honestly.

And she was endlessly generous in sharing her time and love with her large family, including wonderful sons, Nacho and Sebastian, and her enormous circle of friends, who turned out in force during this journey in a way that astounds and touches me still; a true reflection of the pure love she emitted.

But this generosity extended far beyond just friends and family. She dedicated six years of her life to establishing and running an equine-therapy organization solely for the purpose of helping children with special needs. She spent five of her last months on earth caring for an elderly woman with advanced Alzheimer’s disease and these are but a couple of examples of her utter selflessness and compassion for others.

She loved and truly appreciated things of beauty and especially art, music, plants, and flowers and she had a great affinity and talent for gardening/landscaping. Not to mention her love of all animals large and small, but especially horses. She was beauty personified, to me.

We found each other unexpectedly, a bit later in life, in beautiful Baja Mexico, at a very difficult chapter in each of our lives. We healed one another.

She is one of the greatest gifts of my life and I am eternally grateful and proud to have been her partner for the precious time we shared.

I hope these photos might offer a mere glimpse into the pure essence of this spectacular human being.

The pain of losing her is exquisite but so was the joy of knowing and loving her.

My sweet Ale, you will be missed and cherished beyond measure and without end.
