Mordine & Company Dance Theater is the Midwest's longest-running contemporary dance company, founded in 1969. Dance Theater has produced works whose coalition of choreography and theater has won critical acclaim. Praised for original choreography combining wit and sheer movement with technical sophistication, Mordine is renowned for her craftsmanship. As stated by the Chicago Reader, “Her canny ma

nipulation of the raw material of dance - sheer movement of space and time - knows no peer." Over the years, Mordine & Company has had the honor to work with a number of illustrious collaborators from diverse artistic disciplines. The Company has consistently created new work and collaborated with artists from different genres to examine and explore current events. Shirley was awarded See Chicago Dance Legacy Award for her demonstration of extraordinary leadership in the field of dance and a momentous impact on the Chicago dance community. In addition to her creative accomplishments, Mordine is recognized as a master teacher who excels in integrating the skills of dance technique, choreography, and performance. Recently in May of 2023, Shirley gifted Mordine & Company Dance Theaters, 50 years of the company’s creative archives into the Newberry collection. Part of the celebration will be the announcement of the Shirley Mordine Dancemaker Fund in honor of her prolific legacy and lifelong commitment to dance.
