Above, his partner's hands are raw from cranking. The third man rests on a shovel handle, wiping sweat with a rag that once was a shirt sleeve.

Most hand-dug wells produced nothing or worse, salt brine or sulfur water. But the ones that struck? A single barrel of oil in 1875 sold for the equivalent of two weeks' wages. Enough to keep a family fed through winter. Enough to make a man try one more hole.

Today, we remember the gushers and the tycoons. But before Rockefeller, there was the rope. Before the refinery, there was the rusted bucket.
