Unleash Your True Power and Ruin the Vibe

What we want: a short play no more than 15 minutes

Within your play:

Power must be unleashed

Vibes must be ruined

We want low-budget camp, high octane narrative, and quick maximalism in 4-D.

Dear Runaways fans,

Since we took over in 2021, we brought you outdoor audio experiences, live lit rituals, new labs, new play productions and a new short play festival. The Runaways Lab Theater successfully continued to make theater for audiences that are sick of theater.

We had fun with you the past few years, but it’s time to pass the torch to new blood 🩸...

We are thrilled to announce the new artistic director of The Runaways Lab Theater: Dakota Brown!

Dakota first created with the Runaways in 2019 for the Doing Drugs and Dying in Space ritual, and most recently directed a short play in the Milking the Beast and Going to Hell festival. Dakota’s sharp, bold and extraterrestrial vision is the perfect match for the Runaways’ primo weirdo soul.

We can’t wait to see where he takes the Runaways.

Thanks for everything…
-Dylan and Jessie (signing off ✌️)

To all the audience members that experienced THE SARCOMA CYCLE, whether it was NANOBLADE 1998, SPRING BREAK 2020 or THE MOURNING LIGHT 2050, thank you. You all deserve an olympic medal! If there was a sport in bringing your full selves to a play you get gold. The actors and crew also get gold. Everyone gets gold for making it such a special experience. Photographer Scott Teresi definitely gets gold. These amazing photos! He captured something ineffable about the plays. 🤯 Thank you 🙏

Your last chance to experience THE SARCOMA CYCLE is fast approaching. 😱The final showing is this Saturday July 13 and it’s dangerously close to selling out. Get your tickets now! Marathon or individual tickets remain at this time but act fast — the first marathon sold out and people were begging for tickets! *note* You don’t have to commit to all 3 plays. You can choose to see 1 or 2 of the plays. Many people are doing it this way and that’s fabulous too. Massive thank you to the audience who joined us for the first marathon 🤩It was an electric unforgettable day and an athletic feat for all involved. Don’t miss your last chance to see THE SARCOMA CYCLE which has been published by 11:11 Press. This is a historic event — the first repertory production in Chicago in a decade. Ok now see you in the cycle?! Promise?! 🥺And here’s a photo from the first marathon of Aria in THE MOURNING LIGHT 2050, the third play in the cycle. Photo by Joe Goudreault

Today marks the start of THE SARCOMA CYCLE — the first repertory production in Chicago in over a decade (3 plays all at once 🫨) and we are so excited to welcome everyone into the cycle! FYI a lot of people want to come to the marathon performances (6.29 and 7.13) which is amazing but be advised they WILL sell out so we definitely encourage you to come to one of the weekday performances. See you in the cycle! Photos: Dan Mozurkewich and Gwen Hilton

Wow, we can’t believe it’s all over. Theater is like that — it comes and goes in an instant. But we won’t soon forget this. The first ever Milking the Beast and Going to Hell ritual seemed like a pipe dream a year ago. But we actually did it! We have two main groups to thank. Number 1: Thank you to our audiences for making us SOLD OUT for all of our performances!!! Not only that but your presence each night was extraordinary. Your laughter, your screams, your cheers, your attentiveness. We so appreciate you traveling to hell with us for a “there and back trip” 😉Number 2: All of the brilliant artists involved in this project. All of you actors, directors, playwrights, costume designers, sound designers, et cetera et cetera— YOU made Milking the Beast what it is. Your inventive acting styles, your other wordly movements, your dances, screams, your milking and your hellish verve propelled this behemoth of a show into the theater ether. Over the next month or so we’ll be posting images from all of the shows so we can attempt to relive the descent down hellmouth on this measly app.
