The University of Chicago Dance Council

The University of Chicago Dance Council Dance Council is a co-curricular program that oversees, supports, and creates programming with all of the 13 existing dance organizations at UChicago.

The Dance Council is a newly created co-curricular program with Theater and Performance Studies, involving more than 300 students, 7 productions annually, with a sweeping range of forms from Ballet to Bhangra.

Congratulations to for winning first place at Where Fun Comes to Dance 2025! uchicago Maya is a contemporary fusion dance company that values experimentation and expression through movement. Their work incorporates primarily contemporary, jazz, modern, and hip-hop styles into their choreography, and is entirely student-run. Each year, they work towards four main performances across styles to showcase original choreography.

Congratulations to for winning second place at Where Fun Comes to Dance 2025! Formed in 2009, EX Crew is a competitive choreography group that aims to build a hip-hop presence at UChicago while connecting with the dance community in the greater Chicago area. While EX Crew is a primarily hip-hop-centric group, they also incorporate a multitude of dance styles into their choreography to create innovative, concept-forward sets. EX Crew regularly competes at regional competitions like World of Dance, hosts their two annual shows Friends & Family and Revival, as well as participates in other cool events like Where Fun Comes To Dance. They have a new upcoming show called EX Factor on May 18th, check out their Instagram for more information!

Today is the day: Where Fun Comes to Dance! UChicago Apsara () is the premier Indian classical dance team at the University of Chicago. Showcasing styles like Kathak, Kuchipudi, Bharatnatyam, and more, Apsara celebrates the rich cultural heritage of India through classical dance. Our mission is to bring the beauty and intricacy of Indian classical dance to UChicago and our team performs at UChicago events and hosts showcases throughout the year. Our upcoming Spring Showcase is on Sunday, May 18th in Ida Noyes. This performance has been choreographed by Siya, Anika, Anokha, Nandini, and Alisha, and we hope you enjoy our set!

Today is the day: Where Fun Comes to Dance! UC Dancers () is a contemporary, lyrical, and jazz-based dance group. Founded in 1978, we are proud to be the oldest dance RSO here on campus, and we strive to create a joyful and supportive community for our dancers. As a group, we have students from all years, including some amazing graduate students. In addition to our annual participation in Where Fun Comes To Dance, UC Dancers also puts on a Winter Showcase featuring small group pieces, duets, and solos—and of course company-wide dances as well. As always, our performance today is entirely student-choreographed and student-run and is meant to show our stylistic range as a group. Huge thank you to our student choreographers: Chloe Sun, Sabrina Kane, and Eva Herrick!

Today is the day: Where Fun Comes to Dance! Ankara Magic (.magic) is Uchicago’s first and only African Dance team, founded just 3 years ago by a group of students who wanted to create a space on campus for African culture to be expressed. We celebrate a wide range of African dance styles in afrobeats, afro-pop, and amapiano. We incorporate traditional African movements, different legwork variations, and modern trends from throughout the black diaspora. The ACSA and OBS culture shows as well as our annual showcase, are a few of the performances we participate in each year. Ankara Magic is more than just a team, but is a growing community of people who love to listen to, vibe, and dance to Afro-beat music.

Today is the day: Where Fun Comes to Dance! Chicago Swing Dance Society () is a dance group open to everyone in Chicago and beyond. We host open social dances, beginner Lindy lessons, and special series for all levels of swing dancers. We specialize in East Coast Swing and follow in the rich history of swing dancing, starting in the 1920’s in the Harlem Renaissance, inspiring the advent of West Coast Swing, hip-hop and more. If you like what you see here, our next social dance is on May 16th, with the beginner lesson starting at 7:30pm and the dance starting at 8:30pm in Ida Noyes. We hope to see you there!
