Neil Goodman () considers how landscape, place, and the passage of time reshape a sculptural language developed over decades.

We are pleased to open the 2026 Chicago gallery season with "Rivers & Valleys," a solo exhibition of sculpture by Neil Goodman. Bringing together recent works in bronze, the exhibition reflects both a continuation and an evolution of Goodman’s decades-long exploration of line, mass, void, and material.

After nearly forty years in Chicago, Goodman relocated to Los Alamos on California’s Central Coast, exchanging the industrial landscapes of Chicago’s South Side and Gary, Indiana, for rolling hills, agricultural valleys, and oceanfront cliffs. "Rivers & Valleys" emerges from this transition, absorbing the rhythms of a new landscape into an abstract sculptural language developed over the course of his career.

Goodman’s career has combined an active studio practice with a longstanding commitment to teaching. He received his BA from Indiana University Bloomington and his MFA from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University. He later joined the faculty of Indiana University Northwest, where he became a founding member of the Fine Arts department and taught for nearly four decades before retiring as Professor Emeritus of Fine Arts in 2017. His work has been presented widely in museums, galleries, and public settings across the United States.

Thank you to Kate Mothes () at Colossal () for the lovely review of "Mont Blanc on Wood" by John Buck!

"From the Three Patriarchs of Zion Canyon to the swamps of Louisiana to the immense cascade of Niagara Falls, John Buck’s landscapes evoke the juxtapositions and proportions of dreams. His solo exhibition, Mont Blanc on Wood at Zolla / Lieberman Gallery, draws us to the fuzzy boundary between the familiar and the uncanny." - excerpt from "Uncanny Landscapes in Pen and Ink Span Wooden Panels by John Buck" by Kate Mothes

John Buck - "Mont Blanc on Wood" is now on view through August 8th.

Congratulations to Buzz Spector () on the publication of his newly commissioned work in "Inscription: The Journal of Material Text, Issue 6: Cuts/Tears."

This issue brings together newly commissioned works by artists and writers whose practices engage the book as both material and metaphor. Spector's work is featured among this exceptional group with a contribution that extends his decades-long investigation into the life of books.

"Buzz Spector is the star of this issue. Images from fourteen of his works divide the main sections and each contribution from one another. Works of torn edges create edges or boundaries between the issue’s contents. A stroke of genius from the issue’s editorial and design team. The range of Spector’s sources also draws attention to other boundaries inherent in the body of his work and the issue’s theme: the border between high and low in art, East and West, and Art and Nature." - excerpt from "Books On Books Collection – Inscription: The Journal of Material Text, Issue 6 (Tears)"

John Buck () transforms mountains, forests, and waterfalls into richly symbolic landscapes that reflect on humanity's evolving relationship with the environment.

John Buck – “Mont Blanc on Wood”
July 10 – August 8, 2026
Opening Reception: Friday, July 10th, 4 to 7 PM

Zolla/Lieberman Gallery is pleased to present "Mont Blanc on Wood," an exhibition of new pen-and-ink drawings on jelutong panels by acclaimed American sculptor and printmaker John Buck. Best known for his carved wood sculptures and monumental woodblock prints, Buck has spent more than five decades exploring the intersections of history, popular culture, environmental stewardship, and contemporary life.

"Mont Blanc on Wood" marks a significant evolution in Buck's practice. Departing from the densely layered imagery of his sculptures and prints, these intimate drawings focus on singular landscapes inspired by the American West. Mountains, forests, waterfalls, and geological formations emerge through finely rendered pen work that transform familiar places into surreal environments. Rather than constructing expansive symbolic narratives, Buck distills each composition into a focused meditation on the enduring beauty of the natural world.

John Buck is a celebrated American artist who lives and works in Bozeman, MT. He received his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute () and his MFA from the University of California, Davis (). Working across sculpture, printmaking, and drawing, Buck is known for his intricately carved wood sculptures and multicolored woodblock prints. His work has been exhibited extensively throughout the US and is included in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum (), the Art Institute of Chicago (), the Whitney Museum of American Art (), the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (), the Denver Art Museum (), and numerous other public and private collections.
