She is a freelance scenic designer, photographer, and fine artist. Sarah loves the Chicago theatre community, and strongly supports the vibrant storefront scene. She works with many companies around the city and its suburbs.
In August 2015, she was invited to join Two Pence Theatre Company as a company member. While a company member, she served as its Resident Scenic & Properties Designer, and I
ntern Program Director; however, the company had to make the tough decision to close its doors in September 2016.
Her work was exhibited at the 2012 Prague Quadrennial in the Czech Republic, and had her photography exhibited in New York City during the summer of 2013. Sarah holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Design and a Studio Art Minor in Oil Painting from Hope College in Holland, Michigan. She earned her Master of Fine Arts degree in Scenic Design from Northwestern University's Stage Design Program in Evanston, Illinois where she received a full-ride, and trained under award-winning scenic designers Daniel Ostling, Todd Rosenthal, and Walt Spangler. When she isn't at the theatre or working in her studio, Sarah can be found doing small gigs like pop-up workshops, window displays, and decorating people's homes! She enjoys summer street festivals, biking, running, autumn and fall colors, playing piano, and sometimes binge-watching Netflix TV Shows. Sarah is a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Theatre in Northeastern Illinois University's (NEIU) Department of Communication, Media, and Theatre. She teaches courses in: survey of theatre, theatrical design and technology, scenic design, computer-aided design and drafting, rendering for the theatre, and special topic courses in visual storytelling and puppetry. She will also be designing for and working as the Technical Director for NEIU's productions at the Stage Center Theatre. She resides in the northwest side of Chicago with her husband, Matthew.
