College Improv Tournament

College Improv Tournament CIT is aiming to come back soon. Maybe this spring? Stay tuned. During the 2016-2017 season we anticipate over 140 teams will compete in 14 regional competitions.

The College Improv Tournament is a celebration and competition featuring collegiate improv teams from around North America. Each team has 20 minutes to do any kind of improv that they like (short form, long form, musical, narrative, etc.), so as long as it's improvised, its fine with CIT! The regional competitions take place in Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Los Angel

es, Minneapolis, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Seattle, and many others! Local, professional improvisers act as judges and give feedback to all teams at every level of the tournament. The winner of each regional moves on to CIT's National Championship in Chicago to play for the title of CIT's National Champs!

A new improv book was released today written by Matt Fotis. I’m honored to share #24 with the great Susan Messing. We’re part of the chapter called “The Second Wave Luminaries” (along with iO House Teams; Tj & David; Mark Sutton; Joe Bill; Frances Callier; Shaun Landry & Oui Be Negroes).

The thing about lists (Year’s Top 10 Movies; Rolling Stone’s 100 Best Guitarists, ect), everyone has different points of views about them: who’s on there, who’s not, what order, and why, but that’s what creates conversation, criticism, debate and discussion.

What I like about Matt’s book is that he lists everything in 8 distinct chapters: The Icons; The First Groups; The Second Wave Luminaires; Film & Television; The (Further) Expansion Of Improv; The International Powerhouses; The Fourth Wave.

This book goes from Viola Spolin to Zoomprov. In it he lists actors, troupes, schools, theatre, film, and TV. His final sub-chapter is called “The Person You Can’t Believe I Didn’t Include” and he lists many names of people, national and international, and theatres that he could have listed, so he gets it. As he writes in his book’s first sentence, “This list is not definitive.”

He knows any future edition of his book (if there is one) that he may add or subtract names of current or future improvisers. No list is ever complete. Each list ever made by anyone always has different conscious and unconscious preferences contained within.

I also want to point out, in his title, Matt didn’t write “Fifty Best Improv Performers” or “Fifty Most Famous Improv Performers”, but “Fifty Key Improv Performers”, and the use of the word “key” Is key to his insights, his choices, and where he’s coming from.

For me, this book is well written and easy to read. It’s a lovely, shorter, and more academic alternative to Sam Wasson’s book “Improv Nation”, and it fits well in the same genre.

Get the book. It’s a great conversation starter. Plus you get to read about many of the improv artists ranging from the past to the present, and from Chicago to all around the world.

UPDATE ON 2022 COLLEGE IMPROV TOURNAMENT
****************************************

First off, I want to apologize for the delay in getting news out about the tournament. In an attempt to give everyone the most time to see if a live Tournament could happen, I know I put a lot of you in a frustrating holding pattern.

However, after careful consideration and with the new Omicron variant arriving over the Thanksgiving break, I have decided to cancel the 2022 College Improv Tournament.

While our partner theaters have been doing an exceptional job with keeping patrons safe, our biggest logistical challenge has been the intense travel aspect of CIT on both the participants and the production staff. Until there's more information about the current vaccine and it's ability to protect people against Omicron, I cannot in good conscious host the kind of Tournament experience we've had in the past.

This was not the outcome anyone wanted. I empathize with the seniors leaving who never had a live experience after freshman year. While I am still considering a virtual experience in the Spring, I know Zoom burnout is very real and I understand that people may not want to go through it for a 2nd or 3rd time. That being said, if your team is interested, please send an email to [email protected]. If there is enough interest we will move forward with one.

Thank you all in advance for your understanding in what was ultimately a very difficult decision.

Another cool article about SNL actor/writer Bowen Yang. He's an alumni of NYU's Dangerbox and a former CIT Nationals player.

At the end of his second SNL season, Yang has carved out a space for q***r characters whose sexuality isn’t always a punchline.
