Words cannot describe how grateful I am to have had this experience again at Hubbard Street. Meeting so many likeminded individuals while also having the luxury of being a student was such a gift. I am once again reminded that culture and community are vital. To walk into a space, dance with people I have never met before, yet walk away feeling like it’s home is a true testament to the power of culture and community. It’s a reminder for me to always strive for that standard and that it IS possible.

I also feel that the dance industry has become a bit of a runaway train. There is pressure to post, perform, constantly having to be “on”, comparison, status, and people may feel they need to form an opinion about everything. This experience reminded me to be in the moment and embrace the gift of dance and what it means for me. I remember telling myself before we were about to perform at the showing, “If there is one thing I’m going to do, it’s enjoy myself.” And I did. No pressure, no comparison, no opinions. Just enjoy the moment.

Thank you again to Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and to everyone who made this such an engaging and enjoyable experience.

I am SO excited to return to Chicago in just a couple more weeks!! What an incredible city.

Shannon Mueller - Shannon Mueller holds a BFA in Dance Performance and an MA in Performance Psychology and is a freelance choreographer and professor of dance at multiple colleges in San Diego County. Her choreography has been presented internationally and at festivals including MixMatch Dance Festival, Young Choreographer’s Festival (NY), San Diego International Fringe Festival, NDEO Conference, Movies by Movers, and Versatility Dance Festival, among others. She was selected as a Regional Dance America Emerging Choreographer and has received awards including “Best Choreography” at the SoCal Dance Festival, and has also attended an intensive with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. Alongside her teaching and choreographic work, she creates movement centered on connection, reflection, and the expressive power of dance beyond language.

“Static”, the black and white pixels on a television or the buzz of white noise, explores the abundance of stimulation that clouds our vision, our being, and our presence. We become lost in the static. But when we ask ourselves, “What if?” and realize that static is an unnecessary illusion, we begin the delicate journey of finding ourselves.
