2021 NEW Collaborative Studio Initiative | Wild Yams - Black Mothers Artist Residency Program
Introducing a new Studio Collective at THE cre.æ.tive ROOM | Wild Yams Black Mothers Artist Residency. Wild Yams Artist Residency provides sustainable creativity + equity for Black Artist Mothers in Chicago. THE cre.æ.tive ROOM is an Art | Design collaboratorium studio located on Chicago's southside. Studio Residency Programs provide space + time to "imagine, create, envision" a distinctive Studio Practice platform for Women Creators of Color. This NEW Collaborative Studio Initiative will serve as a creative incubator for Wild Yams Black Mothers and aims to provide space, community, and entrepreneurial services. A distinctive unified collaboration, both founded by Women of Color with missions committed to equity + access through the arts on the Southside of Chicago for Women Creators of Color.
Wild Yams Black Mothers Artist Residency was founded in 2019 by two Black Mother Artists, Wisdom BATY | Creative Director and Alyssa MARTINEZ| Development Consultant. More news to come about select 2021 Wild Yams Black Mother Artists, explore Wild Yams at https://www.instagram.com/wild_yams/.
About the FOUNDERS:
Wisdom BATY | Founder, Creative Director
Wisdom BATY is a Chicago-based Interdisciplinary Artist + Arts Collaborator interested in curating space for black and brown mothers and their children. With over a decade of community organizing, her practice reimagines physical space, autonomy, and historical accuracy in support of black motherhood through the lens of intersectionality and social practice.
An Artistic Collaborator, BATY has co-organized 6018N Windows to the World exhibition 2020, the inaugural Black Experience: Panel and MFA Showcase at SAIC Sullivan Galleries in 2015, and The Black Family Reunion 2017 with Threewalls and Reunion. Baty was a 2017 Marwen Teaching Artist Resident. BATY received a BFA in Painting at the University of Illinois at Chicago's School of Art and Design and Masters in Arts Administration and Policy, from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Alyssa MARTINEZ | Development Consultant
Alyssa MARTINEZ is a Poet, Visual Artist, Mother, and CommunityArts Organizer. MARTINEZ work explores identity, memory, spirituality, and the body. She curates independent events that center around Mothers of Color in the Arts. Her work was published in LVNG Magazine, and in 2021/22, MARTINEZ will release a chapbook of poetry and drawings, Turn. In addition to her artistic practice, Martinez produces community and cultural events. Her collaborative contributions include Chicago’s Pitchfork Music Festival and recently Spektral Quartet.
MARTINEZ received a BFA in Writing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is a recipient of the 2019 3Arts Make a Wave Award. Explore her Studio Practice at https://www.alyssahydemartinez.com/.
