📘 Pardon our interruption—were you trying to read?

In this intimate early portrait, Jacques Louis David depicted his aunt, interrupted from her book and looking up at the viewer, originally her nephew, with warm reserve. Her glance suggests an affectionate bond between the painter and sitter.

Following his father’s death in 1757, the young David grew up in the house of his uncle, architect François Buron, and his aunt, Marie-Josèphe Fromont. Madame Buron was particularly supportive of David’s desire to become a painter, in opposition to her husband’s wish that he study architecture.

One of the most prolific Dutch landscape painters, Nicolas Pietersz Berchem executed scenes of the Italian campagna (countryside) for cosmopolitan collectors who appreciated foreign views.

Against the muddy palette used for the livestock, Berchem highlighted the shepherdess’s skirt with a vibrant blue, a color that attracts the eye of the viewer and of the young shepherd nearby.

“I want to make somebody feel less alienated—that's the most meaningful thing to me.” —David Wojnarowicz.

A key figure in New York’s 1980s East Village art scene, Wojnarowicz created powerful works across media that merged punk aesthetics with personal and political activism. His art—raw, emotional, and urgent—often addressed the stigma and injustice faced by people living with HIV and AIDS.

Exemplifying this period is "Untitled (One Day This Kid…)," in which a picture of the artist as a child is surrounded by a fierce written critique of American political and social systems that sustain a cultural homophobia.

Can you spot the differences in these two works?

A sensitive interpreter of the human experience, Rembrandt van Rijn painted expressive studies of single figures throughout his career, conveying character through dramatic clothing and lighting.

In Rembrandt's time, students and apprentices would copy a master's work to learn painting techniques and also to expand a workshop's sales of popular images.

While both paintings shown here look identical, one is attributed to Rembrandt and the other to his apprentice.

Check the comments to see if you got it right, then catch these works in Gallery 213 before they part ways on June 9.
