Above Market Gallery

Above Market Gallery Above Market is an alternative gallery space located in the neighborhood of Avondale, run by SAIC grad students.

Bored with the generic "white box gallery" and its mundane pedestals, we embrace the domesticity and intimacy of alternative spaces and find work to complement these sites. Our past apartment shows include "For a Private Space", "Domestic Disturbance", and "One Night Stand". We’ve thrown shows for SAIC groups such as Latarx and Vitrified as well as participated in festivals such as 2nd Floor Rear.

Our collective has also curated and coordinated shows at other alternative spaces such as "Basement Dwellers", held at the basement of SAIC’s McLean building. This show highlighted work made by students taking classes in the Electronics/Kinetics lab as well as the Neon lab, both of which are located in the basement. Held during SAIC's Open Studio Night, we wanted to expose the school to the multidisciplinary possibilities of mixing art WITH technology and also making technology INTO art. Like our own artwork, we're involved in every step of the process. We curate, coordinate, and install the shows as well as design and distribute the promotional material. Our aim is to bring together a multidisciplinary art community and embrace the nature of the alternative space.
