For over sixty years, a humanoid robot has walked the same path aboard the wreck of the colony ship CSS Lucky Hand, performing a manual reactor reset she knows the ship does not need. The reset surrenders her to a neural reboot that floods her with vivid memories for days: the touch, laughter, and voices of her past life and the family she believes are gone. Each cycle further damages both her synthetic body and the ship's reactor.
She is not only a machine. She was once a person, her mind transferred into a companion-class synthetic body after discovering the truth behind a closely guarded consciousness transfer technology being used to subjugate and enslave people inside machines.
Outside the wreckage, the planet is safe, green, and hospitable. A small colony of survivors has grown around the ship, relying on its aging reactor systems for power and survival. But she lives in flashbacks and memories. The family she mourns still breathes in suspended preservation, endangered by every harmful ritual she repeats to feel them again.
A curious child and a gentle ship AI begin to realize that a person is trapped beneath the metal.
