Happy Heavenly Birthday, Tamir. Thank you, Ms. Samaria Rice, for your love, trust, and these offerings.

We join you in spirit as you consecrate the site of Tamir’s passing with historic landmark status, a long overdue recognition of the joy and sacredness of his life and the magnitude of the injustice of his murder.

Join us today at Stony Island Arts Bank to uplift Tamir’s memory as we gather near the Tamir Rice Memorial Gazebo at the Stony Island Arts Bank, a material memorial to his life and the organizers who fought for justice in his name.

Tonight, DJ Duane Powell will be spinning a sonic tribute until 5 pm. Yaw Agyeman and Angel Bat Dawid will offer up a live performance beginning at 6:30 pm, followed by a vigil and communal reflection beneath the Tamir Rice Memorial Gazebo.

Please join us as we honor Tamir and Ms. Samaria Rice with this sonic tribute.

Thursday, June 25, 1 PM - 8 PM | In honor and celebration of what would have been Tamir Rice’s 24th birthday, we invite you to join us for a special tribute to Tamir’s life and legacy at the Stony Island Arts Bank (6760 S. Stony Island Ave).

In collaboration with longstanding sonic stewards of the Tamir Rice Memorial Gazebo, we are grateful to offer a daylong program where Tamir’s joyful and creative spirit is channeled through the artistic practices of Chicago’s preeminent musical practitioners.

1:00 PM - 5:00 PM: A sonic offering and set by DJ Duane Powell

5:00 PM - 6:30 PM: Vinyl selections curated and spun by Yaw Agyeman

6:30 PM - 7:30 PM: Invocations and live performance by Angel Bat Dawid and Yaw Agyeman

7:30 PM - 8:00 PM: Culminating vigil and reflection

Yunomi will offer bar service, and Han Cha will offer reservations at 1 PM, 3 PM, and 5 PM.

Happy Juneteenth! Today, we reflect on the significance of this day in 1865, when enslaved Black Americans learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Galvanizing celebration and remembrance, Juneteenth is a testament to Black resistance, ancestral endurance, and generations who revolted, persisted, and dreamed freedom into being.

As we recall this history and the breadth of Black liberation movements, we especially acknowledge the necessity of rest, wonder, joy, and sovereign stillness for Black folks today. These are the conditions we seek to cultivate: reclaimed Black space and land where our people can gather, ground, and be free. We find ourselves reflecting on moments already shared at The Land School, where neighbors, artists, and friends have come together to do just that.

Here at Rebuild, we hold gratitude for these liberatory experiences alongside you all, and we look forward to creating continued space and opportunity for freedom to flourish.

Today, we gather at The Land School for an at-capacity Freedom Lullabies program with D-Composed and Tricia Hersey of The Nap Ministry, engaging rest as resistance and as reparative practice. We hope all Black folks find moments of respite and remembrance today, and we look forward to welcoming many of you here soon.

Saturday, June 20, 5 PM - 8 PM | Join us as regular selector, Titus Wonsey, welcomes DJ Brilla to A Listening Space for a special Listening Hours session.

For this listening session, DJ Brilla will share selections that illuminate the intersections between Chicago’s rich musical legacy and the global sounds that have shaped his own record collection. Drawing from soul, jazz, blues, funk, disco, house, and Latin rhythms, DJ Brilla will trace how music travels across borders and returns in new forms. The session will move from Midwest grooves to Latin reinterpretations, exploring the connections between local histories and global rhythms through sounds from his personal archive.

Thursday, June 18, 6 PM - 9 PM | Join us at The Land School, now on the third Thursday of every month, as our creative partner, International Anthem, hosts curated Listening Hours sessions with members of the label and special guest artists.

For June’s session, International Anthem’s own King Hippo will spin vinyl selections pulled from both the label’s expansive catalogue and his personal collection, offering music from decades past to music not yet released. Guests are also invited to bring chess boards to play, listen, and be in community with one another throughout the evening.

In the words of our founder, artist Theaster Gates, “beauty is a basic service.” Thoughtful design is a service to the mind, creating the conditions that support dreaming, creativity, and bold experimentation. For our creative partners-in-residence, our neighbors, and our guests, the objects that we live with and care for influence our connection and feed our imagination.
