Don’t miss out on BLACK METAMORPHOSIS by Sam Kebede and directed by Christian Helem in our final weekend of Summer on the Patio! This fantastic team is intensively workshopping this new play all week - join us for our two workshop readings this Thursday and Friday at 7pm. Black Metamorphosis is a bold, darkly comedic, Afro-satirical reimagining of Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. Through surreal comedy, biting theatricality, and audience participation, the play exposes the machinery of institutional colonization, assimilation, and racial capitalism, asking what happens when identity itself becomes a product and whether true freedom can survive its commodification.

Submissions are now open for Cut to the Chase!
This legendary ten-minute play festival showcases six new plays with moment-to-moment acting in an intimate theater space.

This year’s festival will present the theme: At What Cost?

Eight performances will take place November 5-8 and 12-15, 2026 at The Lookingglass Studio Theatre in Chicago.

Play submission must meet the following requirements:

✅One-act plays of no more than 12 minutes (no musicals)

✅Minimal set and prop requirements

✅Previously unproduced in Chicago

✅Only one submission per playwright

✅Please do not submit a play previously submitted to Cut to the Chase

✅Writers are encouraged to submit plays that generally fit this year’s theme: At What Cost?

Important format requirements:

✅PDF files only

✅Include play title and playwright’s name on the script

✅File name for the PDF should be as follows:
“[play title] by [playwright’s full name]”
For example: The Tempest by William Shakespeare (No underscores, draft numbers, festival name or any other information in the file name please.)

Submission Deadline: September 1, 2026 or after 300 plays are received.

There is no fee to submit. Selected playwrights will receive a $100 stipend.

Felicia Bixler is delighted to continue work with The Artistic Home for this year’s Summer on the Patio, after her work with them earlier this year: The Sugar Wife (Assistant Stage Manager) and Cut To The Chase (Performer). Felicia has also appeared recently, as an improver, in Ante Up (The Second City’s Blackout Cabaret) and Blank Tapes (iO Theater). She has trained in Meisner technique and improv, and extends her gratitude to The Artistic Home for the mentorship and opportunities that continue to shape her theatrical journey.

Summer on the Patio continues this weekend! Meet Gillian Kelly! Playwright of one of our Summer on the Patio workshops, JESUS AT THE DOOR!

Gillian Kelly is a playwright, director, actor, and teacher whose work explores the resilience of the human spirit with compassion, humor, and hope. An original member of The Artistic Home Ensemble, she has appeared on its stage in Orpheus Descending, The Madwoman of Chaillot, and After the Fall, and has directed productions for The Artistic Home, including Unchanging Love by Romulus Linney. Her career began as an opera singer, and she has spent more than 30 years as a voice teacher, helping performers discover authentic and expressive storytelling through song and speech. Gillian is grateful to return to The Artistic Home with Jesus at the Door and thanks the cast, director, and creative team for bringing these Appalachian voices to life.
