Our “Story Catchers Program” adventures this semester are coming to a close! This semester’s topic was “Me and my World.” The students discussed what constitutes their world and had a great time learning theatre skills and creating original scenes based on our discussions. During our last class, we showcased our creative work to a friendly audience of families. Can’t wait to restart our program in the fall!

Mysteries of storytelling!

It is wonderful to see our Story Catchers program students experiment with a variety of storytelling techniques and expand their visions of narrative possibilities. Shadow theatre is so atmospheric and really fun to create!

Witnessing a moment of creation… is a sacred moment! When children create stories and make them come alive on stage, they not only awaken their creative potential, but they also learn how to pay attention to and respect the creativity of their peers.

How exciting to see the students in our Story Catchers program thrive while working collaboratively.

We’ve had so much fun in our first session of the “Story Catchers” program!

We played interactive games centered on building focus and team work and practiced taking on various emotions by greeting each other with a variety of moods!

We learned the main names for the parts of the stage (upstage, downstage, stage left, stage right, center stage) by moving to different spots while impersonating animals! We imagined and created different worlds (sea, jungle, etc.) by acting out their elements.

We will continue to build theatre vocabulary and will start working on creating short scenes in the sessions to come!

We had a blast with this middle school group! The students explored the stories of refugees as part of their social studies curriculum.

Together we learned some theatre skills and enacted what displacement looks like. We discussed such terms as democracy and authoritarianism and their role in the displacement process.

In the end, we all shared the feelings that came up during our time together and how we can channel them to make the world a better place for those in need.

We enjoyed an inspiring afternoon with a talented and creative group of women at Ilham Collective! We dove into the profound themes of “Quietness,” a beautiful poem by Rumi. Together, we practiced theatre skills while exploring how the essence of quietness resonated with our personal experiences.

Through collaborative discussions and creative expression, we crafted a unique theatre piece that reflected our stories and insights drawn from the poem. The workshop was a meaningful and enriching experience, full of connection and creativity among a talented group of women.

Everyone came together to share, collaborate, and discover the power of silence and stillness in our lives!

Quietness

***
Inside this new love, die.
Your way begins on the other side.
Become the sky.
Take an axe to the prison wall.
Escape.
Walk out like someone suddenly born into color.
Do it now.
You are covered with thick cloud.
Slide out the side. Die,
and be quiet. Quietness is the surest sign
that you’ve died.
Your old life was a frantic running
from silence.

The speechless full moon
comes out now.

It has been a delight to work with this group of high school stundents. We explored displacement and refugee crisis by enacting excertps from interviews with refugees.

Within the two hour workshop the group created a cohesive theatre piece about all aspects of displacement and shared their optimistic vision for our shared future. In the end we discussed our personal connection to the refugee crisis and identified ways to act and engage.

Everyone left the workshop feeling inspired!

Irene Kapustina, TAP’s Artistic Director, had such an amazing time visiting MCC Academy. A theatre class of high school students studied Irene’s play “Lost and Guided,” and invited her to speak about her work and theatre! Together, they had a discussion about theatre outside the context of pure entertainment and that theatre, in fact, can be an incredibly powerful tool to make the world a better place.

Can’t wait to be back and get to know this beautiful school and its community better!
