Extremely looking forward to performing October 16th at Yucca Valley Material Lab!! We are traveling with 10 cellos to Joshua Tree in October to make work in the desert. Stay tuned for 'Augmented Geology', an exhibition at the Chicago Cultural Center opening in November!!

Please join us on Sunday Oct. 16th at 5pm as ⁣Katinka Kleijn and Lia Kohl (Chicago) present new performance work for ten broken cellos, responding to as well as creating with the sounds and landscape of the desert. Both accomplished cellists, composers, and improvisers, their shared practice takes a performative approach to the cello as an object, including a series of works for cellos in public pools.⠀

Tickets are $10 - $20 sliding scale. DM to reserve a spot.⠀

⁣Cellist Katinka Kleijn is a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the International Contemporary Ensemble. Active in improvisation, composition and multidisciplinary art, she is a Drag City recording artist.⠀

Lia Kohl is a cellist and multidisciplinary artist based in Chicago. She creates and performs embodied music and performance that incorporates sound, video, movement, and sculptural objects. She tours internationally, working in theatre, jazz, rock, and experimental contexts.⠀

We appreciate people’s concern about wastefulness and these cellos, and we want to clarify: all of these cellos were unplayable when we got them and they continue to be unplayable. The few cellos we found that could be fixed up have been fixed and donated to schools, since we want people to experience the joy (that we share) of playing the cello. The others were trash and have been turned into art!
