We are excited to announce the second exhibition of this year’s Contra Corriente Festival at Chicago Art Department.

“The Butterfly Effect: Bridging Borders” brings together artists sharing personal and communal stories of immigration, environmental displacement, and loss of land. The exhibition reflects on the ways people adapt, survive, and remain connected across borders and generations.

Applications are now open for this year’s festival and will remain open through May 18.

We’re looking for artist-led programs, workshops, performances, conversations, and gatherings that build cross-community connections, uplift grassroots efforts, and engage environmental justice from lived experience.

Program dates: June 13 – July 25
Selected programs receive a $250 budget for activations at CAD or partner sites.

Notifications go out within two weeks of submission.
Weekday and early evening programs are preferred.

Applications are now open for this year’s festival and will remain open through May 15.

We’re looking for artist-led programs, workshops, exhibitions, performances, conversations, and gatherings that build cross-community connections, uplift grassroots efforts, and engage environmental justice conversations. The exhibition spot comes with a $1500 honorarium!

Program dates: June 13 – July 25
Selected programs receive a $250 budget for activations at CAD or partner sites. Donated collaborations from larger groups/orgs are also welcomed!

Notifications will go out on a rolling basis. Weekday and early evening programs are preferred.

CAD is currently seeking couches, long classroom tables, shelving, and office furniture for our upcoming community classrooms and Biblioteca Popular.

Sets of couches are especially appreciated, along with long tables to support a future makerspace.

Applications for our 2026–27 Studio Residency are now open. This is a 12-month subsidized program for civically-focused artists looking to deepen their practice, connect with others, and engage the public through their work. Monthly studio fees are subsidized and start at $270.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our recent 2nd Friday! We’re grateful to have shared the evening with you in celebration of What You Change, Changes You and Time Well Spent. It meant a lot to see so many of you engaging with the work and spending time spending time in our galleries during EXPO weekend.

We have two upcoming programs connected to the exhibitions:
