“A Place To Grow Our Souls,” 2025, Garfield Park Conservatory, Chicago, IL

It’s taken me nearly a year to finally feel ready to share the mural I painted for Good Things Vending and Garfield Park Conservatory. In part, I’m still recovering from the physicality of the 9-month journey, and also, sharing my work on the internet often throws me into an anxious tailspin.

At the time I was invited to create this work, I was reading the work of Detroit organizer and long-time movement activist, Grace Lee Boggs. In The Next American Revolution, she writes, “Art can help us to envision the new cultural images we need to grow our souls...In this period, we need artists to create new images that will liberate us from our preoccupation with constantly expanding production and consumption and open up space in our hearts and minds to imagine and create...”

My hope, always, is that life around us reminds us of the miracle of this one life we are gifted. That each of us is invited to choose love, curiosity, kindness, and play whenever we can.

A heartfelt thank you to Cheryl, and .fun, for helping me install this piece. Neither of us had produced a mural this big before and you made it joyful experience. I admire you so much, friend!

When I made this piece early last year, I was so excited about it, but the thought of sharing it brought up heaps of shame (I feel anxious posting it still!). How dare I call in joy, playfulness, and curiosity? It’s hard to feel like you have a right to pleasure considering *gestures wildly*. I feel immense pressure to be serious all the time, especially as an artist who makes work for social change. We are taught that suffering is a virtue. But whose voice is that? What systems benefit when we cut ourselves off from our desires, play, and curiosity?

This piece is a reminder that joy and play are how we replenish our imaginations. Our liberated futures require our full selves. Not only our grief and our suffering, but also our unabashed joy and silliness.

Play connects us to our bodies, to each other, and to the world around us. I feel most playful when I look for shapes in the clouds…when my love and I narrate our dogs’ thoughts, when a song pops into my head, and I belt it out as loud as possible. Yesterday, I watched an ant carry a very large bit of leaf in our newly built planter box, and it was so delightful.

Play and joy are a refusal to succumb to the violence of empire. I hope that, for all of us, we can experience the richness of play that expands what is possible.

The emergence of spring is a tangible reminder that even in darkness, roots grow deeper as they tap into vast interconnected networks of nourishment, even as conditions appear stagnant above ground. Our interconnections and networks of care melt the carceral violence of Empire.
