The procuring of materials: one man’s trash is another’s dragon head !

3 couches worth of cushions have been rescued from the landfill and made into glorious creatures of the swamp ♻️

➡️➡️➡️ to see how I process upholstery foam to use for my puppet creature creations.

1. Couch cushion ready to be sliced by electric carving knife ➡️2. Jackpot ! Neighbors getting rid of a couch ➡️3. Double jackpot ! So many couches ! ➡️4. Triple jackpot! Found a BUNCH of springs ➡️ 5. Springs are intrinsic in the puppet mechanism building process. ➡️6. The slicing process ➡️7. + 8. + 9. The dragon takes shape

What people don’t talk about when they discuss using discarded items to make things is the amount of time that it takes to process the material and make it useable for the project.

Does it save money and is basically completely free? Yes! But the money you save you very much make up for in time spent, prepping, slicing with an electric carving knife until it’s hot to the touch, wearing out your hand and trying to slice with your other hand, losing sheets of material because you coudlnt hold the cushion straight, etc.

It’s always been worth it to me because it feels Kindve crazy to buy material that is SO readily available (I found all 3 couches this year on my block and the block over!), but it is not without its extra time and work.

FREE Craftivism Event in partnership with Indivisible Chicago NW and the No Kings March on 3/28.

Kids ages 6 and up can independently create their butterfly. With parental support, it’s accessible for all ages !

Supplies include: gluestick, tape, safety scissors, construction paper, washable markers

Multiple time slots available so check the RSVP!
2nd grade and older will be able to do this project pretty independently. Littles are absolutely welcome ! They’ll jsut need a little more help from their adults.

Skills include Cutting (safety scissors), tape, glue stick, markers, and folding construction paper. All supplies will be provided!

Additional activities: bracelet making, protest sign making; all to prep for No Kings March 2.0/Chalk the Walk on 3/28 (RSVP for Chalk the Walk is also in our bio)
