What a surreal moment! Filipiniana Dancers first performed at Battle of the Bamboo over 15 years ago under the direction of May. After several years of Filipiniana dancers coming back to perform with their respective colleges, a new generation of dancers took the stage last night and we could not be more proud. Amazing job to our dancers Gio, Richie, and AJ! Way to represent! 🇵🇭❤️

Tinikling is one of the more well-known Filipino folk dances which originates from the Spanish colonial era and is a favorite of the Visayan Islands. The dance imitates the movement of the tikling birds as they walk between grass stems, run though bamboo forests or try to dodge traps set by rice farmers. Dancers imitate the movements of the birds, while the clappers take these solid bamboo poles and try to catch their feet.

Thank you for letting us share our cultural roots with you this month! May we continue to learn from, appreciate, and love one another 🇵🇭❤️

La Jota is a delightful lively dance from Iriga, Camarones Sur. The dance spread throughout the Philippines, and there are now many forms of Jota whose names are derived by their regions of origins. It encompasses a variety of Spanish-influenced dances accompanied by the use of bamboo castanets, held loosely and unstrung. Here, you see our very own Filipiniana dancers wearing a Maria Clara style gown, barong tagalog, and big bright smiles!

Binasuan is a folk dance that originates from the Pangasinan province of the Philippines. The word “binisuan” means “with the use of a drinking glass” which is shown by the performers holding full glasses on their heads and hands while gracefully dancing and performing balancing tricks. The dance is a colorful one, often performed at festivals, weddings, and other celebratory occasions. Here, it is performed by Filipiniana dancer Monique, who never spills a single drop!
