Sideshow Theatre Company

Sideshow Theatre Company Theatre for the Curious Familiar Stories, Unorthodox Methods, Perpetually Curious.

03/16/2023

After 15 years and more than 30 productions, the ensemble and board of directors of Sideshow Theatre Company has voted to dissolve the company and draw our chapter in Chicago theatre to a close.

Following the turnover of our artistic and administrative staff, a core governing ensemble has spent the past six months considering various structures that would allow Sideshow to continue sustainably. Ultimately, the cancellations of our 2022 Gala and planned production of Pro-Am, the necessary departure from the venue where we have performed for a decade, and the diverging lives and careers of the artists in the company all made this the only responsible decision.

Before voting to dissolve, Sideshow ensured that all artists who had been contracted for Pro-Am were paid their full stipends as though the show had moved forward, and we will be donating our remaining funds evenly amongst seven other non-profits in whose work we believe deeply. Those organizations are listed below, and we encourage anyone reading to support them as well.

A storefront company closing its doors is a regrettably common occurrence in 2023, but though Sideshow will not continue as an entity, we know that our community of artists will continue to be a part of the necessary reimagining and rebuilding of the American theatre currently underway. We thank and celebrate all of the collaborators, audience members, funders, and supporters who made our work possible since 2007. Stay curious, and here’s to a bold new future for theatre everywhere.

The Sideshow ensemble met on Monday, August 1st, and voted unanimously to rescind Wardell Julius Clark’s ensemble membership, as well as terminate all association between Wardell and Sideshow Theatre Company.

The many accounts and accusations of abuse being shared, on social media and elsewhere, made it clear that any continued collaboration with Wardell would undermine our values and stand in direct contrast to our ongoing efforts towards harm reduction and the protection of our artists, staff and community.

We apologize to all of the survivors who have come forward, as well as to those who have been unable to. We are sorry to the artists attached to Pro-Am who the company endangered with his casting, and for the critical error in our casting process that led to hierarchical decision making without a structure of checks and balances. We deeply regret not recognizing and disrupting harmful patterns of behavior before damage was done, and for any other ways that we created or contributed to environments in which people felt unsafe.

Ending our association with Wardell is the first in a series of steps we will take to create safe, inclusive spaces shared by trusted collaborators. We have updated our internal concern path for Sideshow company members, and will be reflecting those changes on our website within the week. We are also reviewing and refining our existing company policies around abuse and harassment. We thank everyone who came forward to speak against abuse.

As we hold ourselves accountable and address both these and future concerns, we will continue to share with you all the ways we identify and implement changes. On our path towards becoming an anti-racist and pro-liberation company, our goal at all times will be to disrupt oppressive and harmful systems. We can and must do better.

Sideshow stands in support of the work stoppage from staff, and the artists who have resigned from Victory Gardens Theater. We will be meeting as an ensemble this weekend to discuss our residency in a collective process that aligns with our values.

✨Calling all Chicago-area playwrights!✨

On May 30th at 6pm CST we’ll begin our first ever Sideshow Sprint: a new and improved open-submission structure for playwrights designed to respect both their time and our company’s capacity.

This inaugural sprint will be open to Chicago-area playwrights only, and once we hit 30 submissions, it will close. Every play submitted will be read and evaluated by two people. Highly-scored scripts will be considered for inclusion in Sideshow’s season and development programs, and we plan to support and uplift the top scripts by including them on a list on our website, which will be publicized to other theatres and artists.

Find more information about the process here: https://www.sideshowtheatre.org/get-involved.html

We can’t wait to read your work!

MEET: Preston Choi (he/him) Playwright of DRIVE-IN TO THE END OF THE WORLD

WHAT SPECIFICALLY INSPIRED THIS PIECE? One aspect is the feeling of something seemingly intangible or conceptual materializing in some physical way, whether that be climate change, late stage capitalism, nihilism, coming of age. Cryptids actually descending on a small town felt like a way to translate that feeling, but also hopefully allow us to reflect on our new contemporary monsters and mythologies.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SCARY MOVIE? The film In Fabric. A cursed dress, the innocent people who get caught up in its path, and also the twisted department store it comes from, it's dark and unsettling, more ominous than outright scary, but also absurd and dry, really beautifully shot.
