The Fascist Party of Italy was named for the fasces, the symbol of ancient Rome's supreme authority (not to mention penal power). As seen here on Benito Mussolini's underwear, the fasces is a bundle of sticks bound together around an axe. If that doesn't make you think "Axis Powers" it's time to review your WW2 history.

Here's a fun starting point: the work of Jacob Burck, Chief Cartoonist of The Chicago Times. He won a Pulitzer for editorial cartooning in 1941. This cartoon was part of his amazing portfolio. Will share more. Endless amazingness in our archives. Thanks to Comics at Columbia !
