House of the Lorde is a site of collective liberation, memory, and edification of the lives and work of Black women and femmes.

We are a spiritual home, art gallery, dance studio, reading room, and poetry stage.

Our monthly Reading Room returns after a two month break. This month we study Toni Morrison’s essay “The Site of Memory.”

Come thru as we allow Morrison’s writing to guide us through conversations surrounding memory, imagination and literary archeology.

As always we’ll have copies of the text on hand and tea.

Today we offer a reading from “Dream of Europe” featuring selected readings, seminars and interviews from Audre Lorde. This particular reading was given July 16, 1984.

We’re on our annual two-month pause from our regular study group, The Reading Room, but our practice of studying Black feminist texts continues.

We wanted to share a small piece of what has been keeping us company this summer.

We hope these words meet you where you are.

as a pathway toward understanding ourselves more deeply.
Because our pleasure is sacred.
We practice burlesque because some of us are learning how to take up space again.
How to play again.
We practice burlesque because being in relationship with our bodies is an everyday ritual.
We practice burlesque as a way of tending to our erotic spirit, learning how to be fully present with ourselves, our bodies, and our desire.

At House of the Lorde, we read & study together.
Shoulder to shoulder.
Sprawled across the floor.
Tea in hand.
Sometimes we pause mid-sentence to process. Sometimes we sit quietly, letting the words settle.
We read because Black feminist texts offer language for living, loving, accountability, and staying in relationship across difference.

This Thursday, The Reading Room returns as we continue our inquiry into Love & Difference with “Revolutionary Hope: A Conversation Between Audre Lorde & James Baldwin”.
