We’re honored to share that Chicago Philharmonic has been named the Illinois Council of Orchestras’ Orchestra of the Year, in recognition of our 35th Anniversary Season. Guided by Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Scott Speck and Executive Director Terell Johnson, the season marked historic firsts for our orchestra and for Chicago’s cultural landscape.
We became the first professional orchestra to perform at Lollapalooza, reaching a global audience of more than 100,000 live and on Hulu. We also debuted An Evening with Sleeping At Last with sold‑out performances at the Harris Theater and our first appearance at Carnegie Hall.
Our inaugural Artist in Residence program launched with violinist Njioma Grevious, who led in‑school workshops and free concerts for nearly 900 students and community members. Free programs like Side by Side with the Chicago Philharmonic and the Academy of Music Performance continued to expand access for young musicians across the city.
The season also featured collaborations with artists including Justin Hurwitz, Bobby Weir and the Wolf Bros, Amos Lee, Gregory Alan Isakov, Kishi Bashi, Muntu Dance, and Beijing’s RDFZ Art Troupe - performances that expanded the symphonic canon while transforming who orchestral music is for.
We’re deeply grateful for our musicians, supporters, and ever‑expanding community of listeners who make this work possible. We’re proud to be part of a cohort of remarkable Illinois orchestras making our state a more vibrant place to live.
