Today’s post is a little untypical — but today is not a typical day either.
I created “Ghosts of Homeland” in 2009, when my style was more representational, influenced by surrealism and symbolic imagery. Back then, the piece was about longing — missing my homeland of Ukraine, my family, my city of Odesa with its familiar streets and beautiful architecture, and my friends whose letters I still keep.
After the full-scale invasion, I see this work differently.
Now it holds sorrow and anguish. The pain of watching my beloved Odesa endure an inferno of devastation and daily bombardment. The weight of imagining families raising children under sirens, protecting their elders, enduring the unimaginable.
Today marks four years of aggression against my country.
Though I am across the globe, my heart remains with my strong, courageous, resilient people.
May they finally see the peace and victory they so deeply deserve.
