๐ŸŽถKimberly Cole Luevano, a virtuosic clarinetist. She studied in Paris as a Fulbright Scholar. Her solo albums earned Grammy nomination consideration. Her students regularly win major international competitions.

Currently, Kimberly is Regents Professor of Clarinet at the University of North Texas. She performs with the acclaimed trio Haven. She also represents Selmer Paris and Dโ€™Addario as a performing artist.

What is one of the easiest traps wind players fall into? Breathing wherever it's convenient โ€” instead of where the phrase actually wants you to.

In this clip, Brent Phillips โ€” this year's TMEA Tenor Trombone selector โ€” is pointing out the breath marks in Etude #1, and while, yes, the breath markings are smart, they don't tell the whole story. The real question is where the phrase truly goes: is it one long line, or a few smaller phrases strung together? Are there sequences building underneath?

Figure out what the piece is trying to say first, then decide where you actually need air.

๐ŸŽท Roy Allen Jr., a powerhouse saxophonist who has been anchoring the tenor chair for the legendary Dallas Winds for over three decades. He has performed on nearly 20 internationally released recordings, including multiple Grammy-nominated albums. Beyond his incredible performance career, Roy is a master educator whose students consistently sweep top chairs in the Texas All-State Bands and win major national chamber competitions.

Currently, Roy serves as the Director of Instrumental Studies and Professor of Saxophone at Dallas College-Brookhaven Campus, as well as Adjunct Professor of Saxophone at Texas Womanโ€™s University. He remains deeply invested in the Texas music community as an active clinician, adjudicator, and co-founder of Sax Day at Brookhaven College.

๐„ข Dr. Matthew Kundler, a dynamic low brass specialist and Miraphone Performing Artist who has premiered solo and chamber works by leading contemporary composers like Quinn Mason. An acclaimed soloist and chamber musician, he has won prizes in numerous national and international competitions and performs with BackBurner!, the only professional tuba ensemble in the United States.

Currently, Matthew serves as the Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. He is also the President of the Austin Brass Collective, where he organizes a main concert series, community outreach events, and an elite youth program for young musicians in the Austin area. โ€จ

Gary Whitman is a powerhouse of the Texas clarinet world. As a performer, he spent 32 seasons playing third clarinet and bass clarinet with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, collaborating with world-class conductors like Leonard Slatkin and Dame Jane Glover. His exceptional teaching at Texas Christian University earned him the Chancellorโ€™s Distinguished Achievement Award as a Creative Teacher and Scholar.

Today, Gary stays highly active in the global music community. He serves as an artist-clinician for Buffet Crampon and Dโ€™Addario Woodwinds, and is the past president of the International Clarinet Association. He also continues to perform locally with national Broadway tour productions.
