Dawn Theatre Project devises theater processes to create plays that awaken the curiosity of creators and audience alike towards the world beyond ourselves. We develop instances for story-sharing that embrace diverse experiences and knowledge. We strive to cross cultural barriers between audience and performers and empower marginalized communities. For this goal, we incubate different languages tha

t can lead to this story-sharing, including physical movement, visual, tactile, oral and written forms of expression. Our devised work frequently puts emphasis on communicating the internal processes of people’s stories. Our ideal is to create ‘collective emotional landscapes;’ moments in which audience and performers are attuned to someone’s story in empathy.

A peek into the process— a glimpse inside Chih-Jou’s mind

"I think people sometimes assume improvisation is easier,
but honestly, it asks for so much more.

More presence.
More awareness—
of myself,
of my body,
of the people I’m moving with.

And it takes time.
To stay in the room.
To sit with discomfort.
To face emotions that aren’t easy to hold.

There’s something really powerful about that kind of honesty.
When the movement is real,
it holds a raw energy—
something like controlled chaos.
it almost becomes a ritual—
inviting everyone in the space
to witness and feel together.

But I’m also constantly navigating this other voice—

“I’m not a good enough dancer.”
“This isn’t interesting enough.”
“My body can’t do this.”
"How can I dance with my knee injury."
“What if I look ridiculous?”

Especially with my knee,
there are moments I wonder
if I should even be doing this at all.

And somehow… I’m still here.
Still listening.
Still moving."

04/30/2026

This work begins with real stories.
Through oral history and live conversations,
we listen to the lived experiences of Taiwanese immigrants,
which shape the structure of the work.

Then we started asking—
how does the body change from day to day?
through emotion, hormones, and what we carry.

After many conversations,
we chose to take a creative risk.

Instead of fixing every movement,
we choreograph emotional arcs and intentions—
while keeping the movement open, improvised, and alive.

So each performance can stay honest
to the changing body—
including physical realities, like Chih-Jou’s knee injury.

A process of listening,
adapting, and becoming.
