On February 15, we hosted a Ramadan Craft and Story time facilitated by Ala Salameh at Beit Al Turaath with the PFC. We loved learning about the importance of the sacred month in Islam and working on crafts together! We introduced ourselves, read stories, sang songs, and made little lanterns to commemorate Ramadan approaching.

Stay tuned for more children’s programs!

DM to purchase. At Beit Al Turaath, we love to collaborate with organizations and small businesses who’s mission contributes to a larger purpose. We are supporting the Susya Rural Women’s Association, which is an especially unique organization, because all of these items were made by Palestinian women who embody sumud everyday.

Susiya, a small village in the Southern hills of Al-Khalil, is one of dozens of Palestinian villages threatened by demolition and settlement encroachment on Palestinian land. On May 4, 2015, an israeli court ruled to allow the israeli army to demolish the Palestinian village of Susiya and expel the 340 men, women and children from their homes for “for public purposes”. Susiya remains at the whim of the Council’s discretion, and, any day, the rest of the village could be demolished for good.

Every level of life in Khirbet Susiya is defined by the occupation. The village is not allowed to establish any permanent structures, even drilling a well for water, so residents are forced to rely on the services of the Israeli government, which are not only expensive but unreliable.

The goods in our Souk are from Susiya. They were made by the women of the Susiya Rural Women’s Association, whose primary means of economic survival are handicrafts and cultural work. Click the link in our bio to learn more about the Rural Women’s Association.

Last Friday, we held a screening of The Feeling of Being Watched, a documentary produced by Little Palestine’s own Assia Boundaoui, this film touches on the issue of surveillance of the Muslim community by the FBI in Bridgeview through the lens of locals.

This film was heavy, raw, emotional, but also had moments of humor and fleeting relief. Thank you to our panelists, for grounding us in conversation on community safety, and to those in the audience who shared their experiences.

We hope to see you at the next one!
