Christopher Art Gallery at Prairie State College The Christopher Art Gallery, located on the main campus of Prairie State College, hosts 8 exhibits per year of professional and student art.

Christopher Art Gallery at Prairie State College focuses on exhibitions by Midwest and US artists working in all media. The Gallery features five shows yearly by professional artists and three student shows each year. The Gallery is free to visit and open to the public Mon-Thurs 9-3 with additional hours on Wed and Thurs from 5-7pm. Artists shown have included Eleanor Spiess-Ferris, John Pitman Weber, Barbara Cooper, Gladys Nilsson, Sergio Gomez as well as other widely exhibited artists.

The Shape of Color brings together five artists whose work embraces one of the central ideas of modernism: that painting is not merely a vehicle for depicting the world, but a language of color, form, surface, and gesture. Echoing the avant-garde painter Maurice Denis's famous assertion that a painting is "a flat surface covered with colors assembled in a certain order," the artists in this exhibition place visual experience itself at the center of their practice.

What can color do? What can shape say?

The Shape of Color explores these questions through the work of Rubén Aguirre, Gretchen Jankowski, Ann Blaas, Ginny Krueger, and James Bowden. Through bold color, dynamic form, inventive materials, and expressive surfaces, these artists demonstrate the enduring vitality of abstract painting.

Whether through flowing gestures, hard-edged compositions, richly textured encaustic surfaces, or exuberant patterns, each artist invites us to experience painting on its own terms. Rather than offering simple answers, these works encourage us to slow down, look closely, and discover meaning through the visual language of color, form, and process.
