A Century of Vision, Passion & Progress

In the 1920s, Cheyenne wasn’t just a dot on the map—it was an ambitious aviation hub with a bold vision. Newspaper editorials urged the city to declare itself an airport town, and signs were proposed at every highway entrance proudly proclaiming:
“AIRPORT CHEYENNE.”

By 1928, the community rallied again—this time to promote the growth of air mail. A full-page ad urged citizens to “use the air mail frequently and consistently,” because the more air traffic Cheyenne generated, the brighter its aviation future would be.

These weren’t just articles—they were manifestos from people who believed in Cheyenne’s potential to fly high.

“The great cities of the future will be the centers of aerial transportation.”

Now, 100 years later, we carry that same passion forward—preserving the history, honoring the ambition, and sharing the legacy at the Cheyenne Arts & Aviation Center.

A snapshot of the early days of American aviation history—when mail was flown coast to coast and Cheyenne played a starring role. ✈️ The DH-4 mail planes, sturdy wooden hangars, and a modest control house made up one of the nation’s earliest airmail hubs.

In February of 1920, in a bold move, the Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce formed a new Aviation Committee to establish our city as the airport for the entire Rocky Mountain region. Visionaries like Ed P. Taylor (Mayor of Cheyenne), J.W. Highleyman (Union Pacific), and the city’s first airplane owner, Reed Hollister, led the charge.

✈️ Did you know Cheyenne was once a central hub in early commercial aviation? United Airlines made Cheyenne a key stop in the 1920s, helping pioneer cross-country flight.

For Garry Chadwick, the Cheyenne Regional Airport isn’t just a place—it’s where his lifelong love for flying began.

"As a boy, I lived two blocks from the east runway and spent hours watching C-130s and other aircraft take off and land. That fascination turned into a dream, and thanks to a mentor, Bill Snyder, I soloed my first flight on my 16th birthday—before school!"

Cheyenne's airport has a rich history, from being a stop on the early airmail route to modifying B-17 bombers in WWII. It even became home to United Airlines' first flight attendant training center.

"Having an airport right in the heart of the city is rare these days, and I love that Cheyenne still has that connection to its aviation roots."
