“Pound nets catch lots of things other than just fish. In the fall they can catch so many leaves that the net becomes very heavy and blocks the flow of the river through and around it. While this image can be described as decorative, it can mean many more things to the waterman who owns, maintains, and fishes it.
I found the very placid water in the net and the reflections it carried to be quite beautiful. T’was a pain to paint but worth the time and effort. Take some time to look at the intricacies of it. ”

“The fog was so thick this morning and so beautiful as it burned off to reveal many oystermen working a recently opened oyster bar on the Chester River.
This day was so rich with things to see and photograph that I am still painting from it, years later. The numbers of boats that came to harvest in close proximity to each other reminded many of the old timers of their early days of oystering. I’m very lucky to have witnessed this.”

“A while ago I spent two weeks with my brother and his family in Helsinki, Finland. An absolutely fascinating place, especially in June when the sunlight lasts longer, around Mid Summer’s Eve. I was most fortunate to be invited to spend a weekend in central Finland on Lake Puruvesi with him, his wife, and their friends. What a beautiful lake with so much history rooted in the perpetual acrimony between Russia and Finland. It actually is very near the border between the two nations. I was lucky enough to witness a small haul seining adventure on this lake and then get to eat the fish we caught that afternoon. There were a few indigenous water craft along the shore which caught my eye with their grace of sheer line and unadorned wood. The watercolor paint brushstrokes took on a life of their own and became rune like. ”

“My eye is always roving about when I’m out on the water and working alongside watermen as they go about harvesting all manner of seafood in the Bay. I see and catch small things, patterns, big views of spectacular sights. I don’t get out in a small boat. I don’t want to own one. Why would I, when I have friends with boats (FWBs). Others can go out in blue-bird calendar weather when the light is good. I much prefer the hours the watermen keep and find those evolving conditions of light, weather, and water to be a source of constant challenge and inspiration. Something like this topline of a span of pound net and the shadows of the mesh on the washboard caught my imagination and became a challenge to paint. ”

“Gunning for geese is just about as classically Eastern Shore as crabbing, oystering, fishing, eeling, turtle potting, fox hunts and horses. Having said so meant that I needed to see and watch this activity. I draw a line with a sport that just kills and doesn’t feed. Sport fishing, hunting Sea Ducks for little or no reason but to shoot them just doesn’t sit right with me. The day of this painting the men had managed to get their limit rather early. It’s a cold, early winter day. The retriever on the background was so excited to do his job that he flew out into the pond in the background to fetch the geese that had fallen in the waters. The gunner is carrying the day’s catch. The textures of feathers and their delicate shading, the colors and grasses caught my eye. I shoot pictures with very little thought. I’m where I am by choice and the recognition that that is where much of my inspiration will come from. I just respond as quickly as I am able to and then think through the pictures when I get back home and edit them.”
