Benché Segar in società fosse riservato e scontroso - racconta Bud Sagendorf, suo assistente ed erede artistico - al bancone della tavola calda si trovava come a casa propria. Era a suo agio con la gente comune e non esitava ad attaccar discorso con chi gli stava accanto. Una cosa però lo mandava in bestia. Quando diceva che scriveva e disegnava fumetti, l'altro, immancabilmente sghignazzando, gli chiedeva: "Fantastico! Ma cosa fa per vivere?" Segar allora si sentiva ribollire e il volto gli si faceva paonazzo, era il momento di andarsene. Andava molto fiero della sua professione (nella striscia del Thimble Theatre Castor Oyl incontra un fumettista per il suo quotidiano).
