Ever wonder where that bone-chilling sound in your favorite haunted attraction or horror movie comes from? Or how an animatronic creature gets its "voice"?

It all traces back to 2001 when I was hired by a few horror industry heavyweights to create the soundtrack for their attractions. That led to the creation of my 2nd audio company Audio Zombie. Back then, it wasn't just about composing haunting music; it was about building custom soundtracks that could actually make your skin crawl.

I always felt that sound is the glue of the story: whether that’s music, sound design or narration . I take that same high-level approach and expertise and apply it to every project that walks through our doors here at Zero By One Sound.

From gritty textures and voice overs for Walkthrough Attractions, to immersive soundscapes for film and Television, I do more than just record and mix songs for bands. I build a custom world of sound design for the horror industry . Every year I am proud to serve over 100 of the top attractions throughout the world.

There’s no substitute for 35 years of ear training.

When you master your music through Zero By One Sound, it’s passing through the seasoned ears of our Mastering Specialist, James Forbes.

James is a true veteran of the craft. With over three decades of experience, he’s shaped records for major labels like Sony, Warner, Universal , Metal Blade and many more. His deep technical expertise led him to spend years as a Full Sail instructor, and his precision has earned him three Grammy nominations.

But if you ask James, he’ll tell you it’s not about the credits. It’s about ensuring that the sonics you've captured in the studio translates perfectly to every listener, everywhere.

We’re honored to have James on the team sine the beginning. I've been working with James for the past 25 years. He brings the kind of "craftsman" perspective that only comes from a life dedicated to audio. Not only is your music is in legendary hands, it's in the hands of someone who cares deeply about your project.

The "Vintage vs. New" debate is fun for the forums, but in the studio, the best tool for the sound always wins.

Some boutique companies are building clones today that sound as good: or even better: than the original vintage units. At Zero By One Sound, I use a hybrid mix of classic vintage gear and these modern boutique pieces. The goal isn't to run a museum; it’s to capture the "thing".

Running audio through real circuitry adds a weight and 3D width that's smoother and fuller than plugins alone. That doesn't mean I’m against software: I use plugins daily for speed and precision. It’s not "Hardware vs. Plugins." They are both tools. The magic isn't the brand name on the faceplate; it’s knowing which tool helps shape the track.

Nothing beats the energy of a room full of people shouting at a single microphone. It’s the heartbeat of a great record.

Since 2002, we’ve hosted countless sessions , and if there’s one thing I’ve learned about gang vocals, it’s this: Energy is the only metric that matters.

If you’re overthinking the pitch or the timing, you’re doing it wrong. We aren’t looking for a polished choir; we’re looking for the unique fingerprint of every voice in that room. The grit, the laughter, and the character are what create that massive, authentic wall of sound.

Tips from the booth:
- Don’t overthink it. The collective vibe beats perfection every time.
- Sound like yourself. The human element is your greatest asset.
- Layering is key. Track multiple passes to build the thickness.
- Play with distance. Move some people back from the mic to create natural depth and air.

Such a great time working with "The End A.D." We still love blasting this record!
