Rez Dog Art Studio

Rez Dog Art Studio “I teach expressive self-awareness, mindfulness, promote problem solving through art. BA Studio Arts (Ceramics) & MA Art Therapy(practitioner)

Teaching others how to create narrative works.” My work is fun, whimsical, and relatable. My work draws on childhood memories and experiences, exploring the role of toys in shaping our lives while examining the broader historical context of Native American history during the time these toys were invented. I invite the viewer to reconnect with their own childhood memories and emotions, while also r

ecognizing that significant events were unfolding elsewhere, often shaping the lives of Indigenous communities. Through my art, I aim to foster awareness of historical traumas and promote healing by encouraging reflection on how these past events continue to influence us. Toys play a crucial role in a child’s development, marking milestones in their growth and evoking powerful emotions—both joyful and painful—that we may or may not wish to revisit. As an art therapist, I view this as an opportunity to reconnect with the inner child, inviting others to rediscover the healing power of play. My inspiration is drawn from the work of Richard and Berdina Crowe, a Cherokee couple who created wooden Cherokee dolls with working body parts, which fascinated me and sparked my own creative journey. In 2006, I created my first cloth faceless Cherokee dolls, a project that continues to evolve. I experiment with various materials, including clay, fabric, leather, metals, and natural elements, as they allow me to express the fragility and resilience of childhood. Since 2015, I’ve incorporated corn shuck faceless dolls into my work, and I continue to explore new ways of expressing myself through these objects of play and memory. Each creation is a journey of reinvention and self-expression, inviting the viewer to engage with both their personal history and the larger narratives of trauma and resilience.
