Meet our visiting gallerist, Garrett Klein of Massey Klein Gallery.

Garrett Klein is an art professional and artist from New York. He graduated from FIT in 2008 and has excelled within various roles in commercial art galleries for the past 11 years, including his own gallery, Massey Klein Gallery which was co-founded with his wife in 2018. He has extensive knowledge of best art handling practices, transport logistics, and sales of artworks within the gallery and art fairs.

Massey Klein is a contemporary art gallery located in the Lower East Side of NYC. The gallery champions both local and international mid-career and emerging artists showing both innovation and knowledge of art history. Husband and wife team, Garrett Klein and Ryan Massey, believe in the collaborative partnership between artist, gallery, and collector. The gallery functions as a meeting place where collectors, artists, and the general public can experience carefully curated exhibitions, discover new artists and build their collections.

The Two-Week Residency is a self-directed program designed for artists who need focused, uninterrupted studio time. Set within the inspiring grounds of Chautauqua Institution, artists receive dedicated studio space and the opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue — all while maintaining the independence of their own practice.
Garrett Klein will join us in week two for a series of studio visits alonside Judy Barie (Susan and John Turben Director of CVA Galleries), Erika Diamond (Associate Director of Galleries at Chautauqua Institution), and Erika b Hess (Artistic Director of Chautauqua Visual Arts).

This residency is designed to balance deep focus with thoughtful critique, giving artists both time and perspective.

We’re proud to celebrate the artists who have taken part in the Chautauqua School of Art Residency programs. Our alumni continue to shape contemporary art through their creativity, generosity, and ongoing contributions to the field, including Byron Ashley.

Byron Ashley is a Ceramist from Topeka, KS. He graduated from Kansas State University with a B.F.A. in studio art in 2019. In 2025, Byron completed his M.F.A. in studio art from Texas Tech University. His work features ceramic objects of discarded products and screen printed labeling. Recently Byron completed an artist residency with Chautauqua Institute and a short term residency with Red Lodge Clay Center and is currently artist in residence with Taos Ceramics Center . His work has been recently featured in the exhibitions CraftTexas 2025, Clay: A Southern Census and MARFA Invitational.

Artists like Byron remind us what can happen when time, space, and community come together in support of focused studio practice. We are inspired by our alumni and the impact they continue to make in the arts. Congratulations to Kasmira Snyder for her upcoming exhibition at Wild Goose Creative's Wild Gallery in Columbus, Ohio, opening on March 13th.
Opening reception: March 13, 6-9pm

Kasmira is a first-generation immigrant from Wales raised in Corvallis Oregon, currently based in Columbus Ohio. She earned her Associates Degree from Columbus State Community later graduating with her Bachelors of Fine Arts degree from The Ohio State University. Her work explores themes related to personal and societal discord, identity, gender, and tradition. As a figural painter she uses a variety of experimental mark-making techniques to build up transparent layers of paint, to create compelling and psychologically charged nocturnal landscapes. Kasmira attended the 6-week residency at the Chautauqua Art Institute in New York in 2025 and was a recipient of the Greater Columbus Arts Counsil Artist Materials Grant. Kasmira’s work has been exhibited at institutions such as KSU Downtown Gallery, the Urban Arts Space, Hopkins Hall Gallery, The Chautauqua Art Institute and the Columbus Museum of Art.

Alumni Spotlight: Kevin Dera
Chautauqua School of Art Residency alumni continue to push boundaries and expand what’s possible in contemporary art. We’re honored to have played a part in their creative journeys, and we’re always inspired by where those journeys lead. 🎨

Born and raised in Adana, Turkey, Kevin Dera is a Turkish-American artist who completed his BA in Studio Art and Environmental Studies at Knox College in 2024. His work captures the shifting reality of landscapes as they are transformed by humans and nature. In his most recent exhibit, Corrupt Optimism, Dera reflects on the architectural, cultural and political changes in the landscape of Turkey after his hometown was struck by a devastating earthquake on February 6th, 2023. He continues to explore themes of instability, destruction, recreation, conservation and healing. Most recently in he has incorporated performance, video and dance into his studio practice during his time at the Summer Residency Program at the Chautauqua Institution.

Spend your summer immersed in an environment that values time and creative exchange. Our six-week residency brings together artists from across the country for studio time, mentorship, and community.

Each year, our Chautauqua School of Art Residencies bring together artists whose work continues to resonate long after the summer ends. 💛
We’re honored to highlight alumni Morgan Binkerd whose practices remind us of the lasting impact dedicated time and space can provide.

Morgan Binkerd is an Indianapolis-based writer and painter. Her paintings have been exhibited in NYC and throughout the midwest. Morgan has had solo shows in Indianapolis at the Harrison Center and participated in many group shows including exhibitions at Newfields Museum of Art and Blue Mountain Gallery. Morgan has attended Mount Gretna School of Art for the intensive summer program 4 summers and Chautauqua’s Visual Arts residency. Her work has been published in the I Like Your Work magazine and Cutbank Magazine.
Morgan recently had her solo show titled "Origins" at the Harrison Center and has an upcoming solo show in February at Anderson University.

Our School of Art Residency wouldn’t be complete without our outstanding faculty. Meet Glenn Goldberg a Lead Faculty member of our Chautauqua School of Art 2026 6-Week Art residency program!

Glenn Goldberg has exhibited extensively and is currently working with Chris Sharp Gallery in Los Angeles, The Approach in London and Maya Frodeman in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. He is a Guggenheim Fellow and has received grants from The Joan Mitchell Foundation, Yaddo, The Edward Albee Foundation and others. He is included in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum, The Brooklyn Museum, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, The Nelson Atkins Museum, The Rose Art Museum and The Art Museum of West Virginia University. He has taught at The Cooper Union, The New School, Queens College C.U.N.Y., The New York Studio School and Brandeis University. He was commissioned to design two mosaic murals for The MTA in New York at the East 149 St Station on the 6 train. He has a forthcoming double book of conversations with Amber Scoon entitled "Question Mark" and The Event" published by Delere Press. He lives and works in New York City.

Great artists thrive in great company, like that of Susan Klein.

Susan Klein is an artist living in Charleston, SC. Recent exhibitions include "I Should Have Been a Pair of Ragged Claws" at the Wassaic Project, "A Window Scrubbed for the Moon" at Asya Geisberg Gallery, NYC, and "Volcano Lovers" at Frontviews, Berlin. Klein is a 2020-2021 recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. Other awards include an Artist-in-Residence at the Dunedin School of Art in New Zealand, a Hambidge Center Residency, Watershed Center for Ceramics Art Residency, Wassaic Project Residency, residency at the International Studio and Curatorial Program, a full fellowship to the Vermont Studio Center, an Ox-bow Artist-in- Residence Summer Fellowship, an Otis College of Art and Design Summer Residency, and residency at Arteles Creative Research Center in Finland. Klein received her MFA in 2004 from the University of Oregon, a BFA in 2001 from the University of New Hampshire, and studied art at NYU from 1997-99. She is an Associate Professor of Art and Chair of the Art Department at the College of Charleston.

This year’s School of Art Residency faculty bring decades of experience, fresh perspectives, and a deep commitment to mentorship. From studio visits to critical dialogue, their support will be invaluable to our 6-week residents.

We’re proud to celebrate the artists who have participated in the Chautauqua School of Art Residency. Our alumni continue to shape contemporary art through their dedication and creativity, including 2025 alumna Lauren Bass.

We are excited to spotlight works from her upcoming February exhibition at Phoenix Art Gallery in Lawrence, Kansas, featuring pieces developed through her evolving studio practice.

Lauren Bass is an artist based in Lawrence, Kansas. She graduated from the University of Kansas where she studied film, visual art, and ecology. She has participated in Lawrence’s Art in the Park summer fair for two years, and shown work in galleries including the Phoenix Gallery, Cider Gallery, the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art, and the Edgar Heap-of-Birds Family Gallery. She most recently completed a residency at the Chautauqua Institution School of Visual Arts.
