On September 4th and 11th, homeschooling families receive our discounted field trip pricing for Homeschool Days!

Can you tell these handsome boys apart?

Meet Chattanooga Zoo’s Komodo dragon, Kadal, and his older (by 7 days) brother, Lil Sebastian who lives at Nashville Zoo! Both Komodo dragons originally hatched all the way in the Czech Republic at Prague Zoo in 2010 before moving to the United States in 2012. Because Komodos are solitary animals, the brothers were separated and went to different institutions. Zoo staff recently realized that by coincidence, both brothers ended up in Tennessee a mere 2 hours away from each other!

Lil Sebastian hatched on August 21st and Kadal hatched on August 27th. Help us wish these Komodo brothers a happy 16th birthday!!

In honor of Dolly Parton, here are a few photos of Doelene the white-tailed deer and Dolly the emperor tamarin. Just as she inspired the names of these two beautiful animals, Dolly inspired and uplifted so many people in Tennessee and beyond.

Dolly's legacy as an artist, humanitarian, educator and so much more will live on in the hearts of Tennesseans.

Shirley was so intrigued by this toy ape!

Our chimpanzees occasionally receive stuffed animals and dolls as enrichment. Sometimes these toys are used to kiss, cuddle and nest with. Other times, chimps have more fun ripping them up like dogs do with a chew toy!

This week, four opossums from our Wildlife Rehabilitation Program were released into Chattanooga Audubon Society! Some were a little more eager than others to step out into this brave new world, but they all made their way out to the wild. Help us wish them luck in the comments below! 🐾

Every year, thousands of ill, injured, or abandoned animals come to our rehabilitation program. Since January, 291 opossums have been brought to us! After a check-in from our vet team, we usually aim to transfer these animals to other local rehabbers who specialize in caring for and releasing small mammal wildlife. If other rehabbers are at capacity, we care for these little guys ourselves until they are ready to go back to the wild. So far, we re-released 55 opossums this year!

Wondering what to do if you think you’ve spotted an opossum in trouble? Always call a professional rehabber BEFORE making contact with an animal. If an opossum is more than 7 inches long (not including the tail), they are likely a juvenile making their way independently for the first time and do not need help.
