“Field Below” is installed!!! Thanks to our volunteers and two little energetic, ladder-climbing boys for all your help!

Join us this Saturday, November 6 from 4-7pm at Gaining Ground Grocery at St. Andrews Center and see these murals in all their earth pigment glory, enjoy delicious local food (including dirt cake!!), view our “making-of” video, and listen to soil stories from three area farmers and teachers. It’s going to be a great night!

Paint day for the Gaining Ground Mural Project: complete! And here's a sneak peek of one of the murals! Lots of gratitude for this super group of volunteers. Some stayed and worked the whole 6 hours (thank you, Hannah and Kayla)! Almost every color you see in the mural has been gathered from farms, neighbors, and roadsides near Chattanooga. Although some of these colors can be a bit finicky (especially in acrylic binder... which I'm still trying to figure out), the brilliance of earth pigments as paint never ceases to amaze me. . .

Amanda and her two sons got to visit Hope for the Inner City and learn about their beautiful garden, planted with help from community members and UTC students. The garden is open to anyone who needs fresh food (okra! corn! chard!). We also gathered a bit of soil for our mural, played on the playground, and visited Mark Making's Pollinators mural on the front fence. Thank you Tory and Joel for inviting us into this welcoming, vibrant space!

We enjoyed an early morning at Wheeler's Orchard and Vineyard, picking blueberries, tasting grapes (THE BEST!!!), and learning about the importance of getting our soil tested. Plants need certain soil pH and nutrient levels to thrive. Testing soil helps us care for the specific needs of our plants and deepens our understanding of the plot of land we call home. Thank you, Jane, for welcoming us for a sunrise vineyard visit!
