Mother is a Universe is a concept born from an ongoing collaboration between artist mothers Katherine Hanks and Raquel Mullins , whose practices have become immersed in the miraculous transformations and bodily/spiritual rites of passage that accompany pregnancy, birth, and motherhood.

This open call invites artists whose work connects with the sensual, earthly, spiritual, and instinctual dimensions of mothering. We are interested in work that explores the altered states of consciousness that can accompany becoming a mother; the paradox of becoming two while witnessing another life emerge into its own individuality; the invisible forces that shape growth, attachment, memory, nourishment, and transformation. We welcome work that reflects on motherhood not simply as identity or caregiving, but as an ancient rite and a profound experience that reveals the body as landscape, vessel, threshold, and cosmos. Artists of any identity or background are welcome to apply in any medium & broad and unexpected interpretations are welcome.

Mother is a Universe speaks to the mysteries of how we are held, how unseen forces guide our becoming, and the tender, fleeting memory of infancy - when every sensation is new and survival is tethered to love itself. It is an exhibition about nourishment and becoming, intimacy and immensity, the infinitely small moments that gesture toward the infinitely vast.

Artist Statement:
"I see my visual practice through the lens of meditation. It is an opportunity to explore the inner weather of my mind and body. Through drawing and painting, I investigate the relationship between movement and stillness as a form of self-discovery, using intuitive decision-making and embodied processes to create an ongoing dialogue between my internal states and the materials I work with.

This body of work, Arboreal Counsel, is a reflection on the guidance and reassurance found in forests during times of uncertainty. The experience of walking through forested areas informs both the imagery and the process of these paintings, which unfold through layered accumulations of marks and forms. The works depict invented landscapes of trellised and intertwined trunks and branches, repeating organic forms, and shifting pathways. Together, these works create a playful space for reflection, offering the viewer a moment of comfort and resolution."

Chase Williamson is an artist from Nashville, Tennessee, whose paintings explore the interconnection of the Southern Black garden, memorial waters, and Black womanhood. Drawing from her Southern living experience, she uses realism and warm golden and blue-hour tones to both honor and reimagine these spaces as sites of possibility. Williamson earned her Master of Fine Arts in Painting & Drawing from the University of Tennessee in Spring 2026, and a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art and Psychology from the University of Tennessee - Chattanooga in 2022. Her work has been exhibited at numerous institutions, including the African American Museum of Dallas (2025), the Museum of Science and Industry (2024), the Frist Art Museum (2024), Cë Gallery (2024), and Zeitgeist Gallery (2024). She also served as Curatorial Fellow at the Frist Art Museum (2023), and completed residencies at Bloedel Reserve (2025) and the Atlantic Center for the Arts (2023).
