Conspicuously absent from the history told about Chattanooga are the stories of our excluded thinkers and artists, and the diversity of our communities. Southern Exposure Productions seeks to amplify the personal narratives of Chattanooga’s marginalized and disenfranchised people so they can stop having their stories told for them. They must tell their own history because our stories tell us who w
e are. It is a story that constructs the definitions we inhabit. It is a story that reveals our past and informs our future. It is a story, when told authentically, that forces us to view others from their perspective and not the one we find most convenient. Southern Exposure Productions is an initiative of Mark Making that provides literary and theatrical arts-based projects that include creative writing workshops, theatre, movement, improvisation and other creative means of expression. Our projects strive to assist individuals in improving the quality of their inner lives, develop the capacity to empathize, and make positive changes in their communities. In addition to individual empowerment, the outcomes of the projects may include theatrical productions, creative writing publications, podcasts and radio shows.
