This brings us to the final piece on the program of our spring concerts “Twilight to Triumph: A Celebration of Life’s Victories.”

Gustav Holst (1874-1934) was deeply fascinated by astrology. This fascination inspired him to compose “The Planets”, a renowned seven-movement suite. We are featuring “Mars,” a relentless and driving composition that reflects Holst’s discomfort with the escalating mechanization of war. The piece serves as a poignant reminder that while we may engage in conflict, we can also march forward to achieve victory. As a rousing finale to the concert, “Mars” prominently features brass and percussion, creating an electrifying and triumphant atmosphere.

As the weather warms up, our concerts draw nearer! The third piece on our program is the first movement of Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8. It is a joyful work, full of appealing melodies expressing his delight in being alive in nature amid the rolling hills and forests. The symphony exudes a celebratory, lighthearted, almost childlike, spirit.

You are sure to be humming these melodies as you leave!

There is one week to go until our spring concert “Twilight to Triumph: A Celebration of Life’s Victories”, so let’s learn about the second piece on the program!

Taking a cue from our current weather, the first movement of Gustav Mahler’s First Symphony is titled “Spring without End”. Mahler noted that the introduction depicted “the awakening of nature from its long winter sleep.” Distant trumpet fanfares, and birdsong open the movement, followed by a buoyant melody of a youthful hero strolling through nature. Although the journey has many moods, we are lead into an exuberant final section by the horns (and an amazing cymbal crash). Mahler ends the movement with a bit of humor, describing the last few measures: “My hero breaks out in laughter and runs away.”

Come on this musical journey with us and bring a friend!

With less than two weeks to go until our spring concert “Twilight to Triumph: A Celebration of Life’s Victories”, let’s learn more about the pieces you’ll be hearing at the concert!

First up is “Saturday Night Waltz”, one of a suite of dances from “Rodeo”, Aaron Copland’s (1900-1990) celebration of the American West. A boisterous opening of tuning strings quickly settles into a slow and elegant waltz, with an air of down-home simplicity, featuring woodwind solos.

This moment of quiet reflection sets the stage for increasingly emotional and celebratory works. Come spend an afternoon with us enjoying this beautiful music!
