Honored beyond words to be on TIME's Top 100 Photos of 2023,.
Making this photo of the statue being cut up and melted in the over 2000-degree furnace brought to me a great sense of honor and humility. It got me thinking about my journey through the story of the statue of General Robert E. Lee in Charlottesville.
From when the talks of taking down the statue started in 2016, the numerous protests, the 2017 ku klux klan parade, the Tiki Torch burning at the park by white nationalists, the Unite the Right rally by white nationalists in 2017, me taking a punch to the face by a white dude wearing a tee shirt with Hitler’s face perched on the Sw****ka, the death of Heather Heyer and all the other traumatic events that followed, all because of this damn statue!
I feel honored to be where I am today, especially as an immigrant, to have had the great opportunity to help tell the story of my community and to be amongst the very few to witness the cutting up and melting of this statue – this catalyzation of change with a direct throughline to the history of slavery that has weaved itself into the story of America. The story of us.
Melting down this symbol of oppression and hate, transforming it into hopefully something of peace and love for the entire community to enjoy – this, to me, is a befitting ending to the story. And a testament to our resilience as a community.
