Mark your calendars for Larry & Joe, coming August 27th to The Front Porch! 🪕

Larry & Joe is the duo of Joropo maestro Larry Bellorín (Monagas, Venezuela) and GRAMMY-nominated bluegrass and oldtime star Joe Troop (Winston-Salem, North Carolina). These two virtuosic multi-instrumentalists fuse their respective Venezuelan and Appalachian folk traditions on harp, banjo, cuatro, fiddle, upright bass, guitar, and maracas to prove that music has no borders. Their engaging bilingual (Spanish/English) program includes storytelling, humor, singalongs, and dancing.

Based in North Carolina, Larry and Joe have built a devoted following with their joyful fusion of Venezuelan and Appalachian folk music. The program they offer features a distinct blend of their musical inheritances and traditions as well as storytelling about the ways that music and social movements coalesce.

The Jacob Jolliff Band comes to Rivanna Roots on Saturday, July 11! 🎻
jolliff is one of the world’s premier contemporary mandolinists. In 2011, he graduated from Berklee College of Music, having studied there on a full scholarship. The following year, in 2012, he won the USA’s National Mandolin Championship in Winfield, KS. A fixture of the bluegrass scene, he has performed and collaborated with Béla Fleck, Tony Trischka, Michael Daves, Grant Gordy, Wes Corbett, and Alex Hargreaves, to name a few. Currently, his focus is on his own ensemble, The Jacob Jolliff Band—one of the most cutting-edge progressive bluegrass groups on the scene today. The band plays a combination of complex original instrumental music and vocal repertoire that spans from traditional bluegrass to unlikely pop covers. Improvisation and the ensemble interplay are at the forefront.

Clara George is an alternative rock musician based in Charlottesville, VA. Annie Savage is the award winning fiddler of The Savage Hearts. As a duo, they bring together their own musical styles to create a unique sound that fuses the alternative and folk music worlds.

Congratulations, Graduates! 🎓

We loved celebrating with our Pre-K music students at their moving-up ceremonies this spring. Throughout the school year, Front Porch teaching artists worked closely with these classrooms—singing, dancing, tapping, learning, and building relationships that extended far beyond music class.

As one Greer Preschool teacher shared:
“Daily music experiences help preschoolers grow in language, memory, movement, creativity, and confidence. Singing, dancing, and exploring rhythm together bring joy, strengthen social connections, and make learning come alive every day.”

She went on to describe how Ms. Erynn became such an integral part of the classroom that Front Porch songs were still being sung in the hallways, at snack time, and during play, even on days when she wasn’t there.

This graduation season also marks five years of partnering with early learning centers and preschool classrooms to bring research-based music education to children who might not otherwise have access to formal music instruction. We’re so grateful to be part of these early musical journeys and hope our rising kindergarteners carry a Front Porch song in their hearts wherever they go next. 💙

Reggae on the Rivanna! 🎶 🏝️ ☀️ The weather is getting hot this month and so is the music. The Oversteppers headline Rivanna Roots Saturday, June 27. Doors at 5:30 pm. Driftwood Radio opens at 6:30 pm.

The Oversteppers, a reggae band from Central Virginia, bring together a dynamic mix of talented musicians from various bands and genres in the Charlottesville area. The group includes members from well-known acts like Guano Boys, Wild Common, The ‘77z, The Cows, Positive Collective, Sisters and Brothers, and the Ragged Mountain String Band. Renowned as one of the region’s premier reggae bands, The Oversteppers have headlined major venues, captivating audiences with their vibrant island and roots music.

Driftwood Radio is a virtuosic exploration of melodic and rhythmic themes, influenced by flamenco, blues, tango, and imaginary folk music traditions. The performance includes complex guitar compositions, existential lyrical impulses, and boomerang loop arrangements.

A versatile musician and educator, Adrian teaches piano, guitar, and flute, with expertise spanning classical, jazz, blues, pop, country, and rock.
