A closer look at the artist behind one of the sculptures currently in our gallery. 
 
We’re delighted to share an excerpt of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘑𝘰𝘺 𝘉𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘯, a recent documentary by Charlottesville-based filmmaker Eduardo Montes-Bradley exploring the life, work, and creative process of American sculptor Joy Brown. 
 
The film offers a wonderful look at the artist whose distinctive, contemplative figures have captured the attention of collectors around the world. 
 
We’re fortunate to have Brown’s Seated Figure here at Consignment House Gallery and grateful to Eduardo for allowing us to share a glimpse of his beautiful film.

A piece of WWII-era precision engineering, built for the U.S. Navy. ⚓️

This Hamilton Model 21 Marine Chronometer, N5002, dates to 1941 and was made by the Hamilton Watch Co. in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Developed for the U.S. Navy, the Model 21 was an extraordinarily precise mechanical timekeeper. Aboard ship, chronometers like this provided the exact reference time navigators needed to calculate longitude at sea. Hamilton’s design was the only American chronometer submitted that met the Navy’s accuracy requirements.

Inside is an 85-size, 14-jewel mechanical movement with a fusee drive, spring-detent escapement and approximately 56-hour power reserve. The chronometer is suspended in gimbals so it remains level as the ship moves beneath it, all housed in a brass-bound mahogany box with its protective outer carrying case and period “tipsy” winding key.

This example is running, though its accuracy has not been professionally tested.

Happy Friday, friends! This week we’re featuring a new artist in the gallery, Precious Burger. 🎨 
 
Based in Fairfax, Virginia, Precious is a mixed media artist whose vibrant, layered work combines acrylic, ink, pastel, collage, and intuitive mark-making. 
 
After more than 30 years as an art educator, Precious saw firsthand how freely children create, following curiosity and taking risks without worrying about getting it “right.” Her work invites adults to reconnect with that same sense of play, wonder, and possibility. 
 
That spirit comes through in her new painting 𝘓𝘶𝘤𝘦 𝘋𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰, Italian for “light within.” The 40 × 30 in. mixed media painting celebrates the inner light we carry and the courage to shine it outward. 
 
In Precious’ words, “This piece is a call to show up shining, without apology, because the world needs every spark we’re brave enough to offer.”

Yes, that’s an original Peter Max painting in our window. 🌈 
 
Peter Max passed away last week at 88, leaving behind a legacy as colorful and unmistakable as his work. His electric colors and psychedelic imagery captured the spirit of the 1960s counterculture and made his work instantly recognizable across generations. 

Max famously described America as “a country with a heart,” and his 𝘍𝘭𝘢𝘨 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵 paintings gave that idea visual form, pairing the stars and stripes with a heart to symbolize compassion alongside liberty.
 
We’re honored to have a piece of his legacy here at the gallery. See it in person on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall, or DM us for details.

Designed by Niels Otto Møller for J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik, these Danish Modern classics feature beautifully sculpted teak frames and the organic curves Møller is known for.

The frames are tight, sturdy, and in excellent vintage condition. The seats are currently upholstered in a vintage geometric textile and can be enjoyed as-is or easily recovered in leather, paper cord, or a fabric of your choice.

The set of six makes a beautiful dining set, the pair works perfectly as host chairs, and the final single would be pretty hard to beat behind a desk.
