Jefferson School African American Heritage Center Jefferson School African-American Heritage Center mission is to honor the rich heritage and legacy Groups are limited to no more than eight people.

Owing to limited space in exhibition galleries, visitors must now obtain a general admission ticket to visit. Groups must obtain a timed group ticket. For your safety, if galleries are full at the time of your arrival, you may be asked to wait. For guided tour information contact [email protected]

In 1918 Paul G. McIntire gifted this land to the city to be used as a park. Before that, the land was part of a plantation.

Before the statue of Robert E. Lee stood at its center, this ground was tied to enslavers, Confederate mythology, Vinegar Hill, and the violent denial of Black freedom.

This Friday, the Swords into Plowshares feedback period closes. So far more than 750 people have weighed in on the proposed designs.

On July 10, 2026 — five years after Charlottesville removed the Lee statue — JSAAHC and SIP plan to announce the final design choice.

This is a chance to engage directly with the design, ask questions, share feedback, and reflect on how public space can carry history, memory, and meaning into the future.
